Adventures in Advocacy

What does it mean to be an advocate? That can depend on the individual but no matter how people choose to advocate, the ultimate goal is to publicly show support of an individual or organization’s cause.

Our mission is to change the way the world views Down syndrome and bring a global message of acceptance for all. We achieve this (or at least work toward this) through advocacy in our every day lives.

We are part of a large community of Playhouses that do incredible work in their local communities across North America and we are serving a global population with our virtual programming! Learn more about our incredible impact on our national Playhouse page.

Your local advocacy support makes an impact globally!

We’ve compiled a list of ways that you can choose to become an advocate for the Down syndrome community:

  • The National Down Syndrome Congress Policy & Advocacy Team works hard to keep the Down syndrome community informed about policy issues and engaged in their policy efforts. They need voices to help fight for equal rights and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome:
  • Attend the GiGi’s Playhouse Educators Symposium on March 9th, 2024
    • This free, online symposium is a perfect way for educators, therapists, paraprofessionals and families to learn how to best support individuals with Down syndrome

  • Attend the Waisman Center’s Day with the Experts: Down Syndrome on March 16th.
    • We partner with the Waisman Center and the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin-SC to support this impactful session every year!
  • Visit our Generation G Community page to find resources that corporations and schools can use to educate and empower people to support the Down syndrome community in a meaningful way
  • Become a volunteer! Get hands on experience with spreading our message of acceptance by assisting with programming, becoming a board member or joining a committee!
    • Fill out a volunteer form HERE to have a conversation about what volunteering can look like for you.
  • Listen to the community!
    • Have you listened to the ‘A Little Something Extra‘ podcast hosted by GiGi and Nancy Gianni?
    • Follow family advocates on social media to learn and understand their perspectives. We recently had a Playhouse family share some wonderful insights here.
    • Read our Generation G Magazine
  • Share our message with your community circle. Something as easy as engaging with our social media posts and sharing information on your social channels makes a huge difference in our how our message is spread. We want the world to know how incredible this community is!
  • Become an event sponsor! We have three major fundraisers that allow you to support our mission from a financial perspective. Our community partnerships are how we can keep our programming free for our families. Learn more about each event here:
