The GiGi’s Impact | A Chance to Shine

One of our very favorite things at the National Playhouse is to learn about all of the lives being impacted by the GiGi’s mission. Everyday their ar3 35 (and growing) locations with an army of volunteers, participants, friends and families living out all that makes the GiGi’s family so amazing. Today we want to share with you a great example of that from the GiGi’s Playhouse Fort Wayne location.  Prepare to smile big!

At GiGi’s Playhouse Fort Wayne, we love to find what our friends love to do and give them opportunities to shine.

This week, we want to introduce you to Keegan, or as his newfound friend MG calls him, Cookie.

Keegan was born with a love of children. He loves volunteering at Busy Bodies and welcoming friends into the Playhouse. After noticing his compassionate heart, patience and genuine love for children, Keegan was given the chance to shine as a co-tutor! He was ecstatic that he was given this opportunity to hone his skills and gain volunteer experience in a field of interest.

After a few short minutes of co-tutoring, it was obvious that Keegan was born to teach. When tutoring his young friend, Max, he lovingly took Max by the hand and said, ” Hey! I was little like you with Down syndrome. Now, I’m 15 and have Down syndrome! It’s awesome we both have Down syndrome!”

In our tutoring sessions, our tutors are to follow the I do, we do, you do approach. You can learn more about this approach by watching the How I Learn video. Keegan instinctively did this approach while working on patterns. It is absolutely amazing to see what happens when individuals with Down syndrome are given the chance to shine!

Keegan, we are all so incredibly proud of how you are using your talents to make your community a better place! You are Generation G!
