Volunteer Spotlight – National League of Young Men (NLYM) La Jolla Chapter

The backbone of any GiGi’s Playhouse is the dedicated volunteers who pour their time, energy, and heart into every program and event. From tutoring sessions and literacy programs to large-scale community celebrations, volunteers make it all possible. Across the country, GiGi’s Playhouses are powered by passionate individuals of all ages and backgrounds—and San Diego is no exception.

In fact, GiGi’s Playhouse is 98% volunteer-run. That means nearly everything you see at our Playhouse in San Diego, from the smiles greeting families at the door to the seamless execution of our biggest events, is made possible by people who choose to serve. Because of this incredible support, more of every dollar donated can go directly toward our FREE, purposeful programs for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

One group that truly embodies the spirit of service and has volunteered with GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego is the National League of Young Men (NLYM) – La Jolla Chapter.

The National League of Young Men is an organization composed of mothers and their sons who are committed to serving their communities, building meaningful partnerships, and developing leadership skills along the way. Their mission aligns beautifully with ours: fostering acceptance, inclusion, and connection while strengthening the community as a whole.

The GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego partnership with the NLYM La Jolla Chapter has been a natural fit. Over the past year, these young men and their families have shown up with enthusiasm, compassion, and a willingness to help wherever needed. They have supported some of our most beloved events, including:

• 🍩 GiGi’s 5K Donut Run – Assisting with setup, cheering on runners, managing stations, and helping create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for over 400 attendees.
• 🍂 Fall Fun Fest – Supporting family-friendly game and activity areas to ensure every participant felt included and celebrated.
• ☀️ End of Summer Picnic – Helping with activities, engaging with families, and making sure the day ran smoothly from start to finish.

Beyond the tasks and logistics, what stands out most is the genuine connection these young men build with our participants and families. Through their service, they are not only giving back—they are learning firsthand the value of inclusion, leadership, and community impact.

At GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, volunteers are more than helpers; they are mentors, cheerleaders, and champions of acceptance. Partnerships like the one we share with the NLYM La Jolla Chapter strengthen our ability to serve and ensure that our programs remain FREE for every family who walks through our doors.

We are deeply grateful for the time, heart, and leadership the National League of Young Men – La Jolla Chapter brings to our Playhouse. Their commitment reminds us that when a community comes together in service, incredible things happen.
