A Celebration of Acceptance and Inclusion

The Donut Run is more than a race, it’s a celebration of the incredible individuals and families in the San Diego Down syndrome community.

GiGi’s Playhouse believes that every individual deserves opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive.

Across the country, GiGi’s Playhouse provides free purposeful programming focused on education, therapy, career development, and life skills.

These programs help individuals with Down syndrome build:

  • Independence
  • Communication skills
  • Social confidence
  • Motor skills
  • Career readiness

Research shows that individuals with Down syndrome benefit greatly from structured educational and social programs that promote independence and community inclusion.

GiGi’s Playhouse was created to help fill these gaps by offering consistent, specialized programming designed specifically for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Because of events like the Donut Run, these life-changing programs remain completely free for families, because finances should never be an obstacle to receiving support or entering a community.

Friendly Competitions (and Some Sweet Prizes)

One of the most exciting parts of the Donut Run is the friendly team competitions. Each year the teams bring creativity, energy, and a lot of community spirit.

Why Events Like This Matter

GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego is 98% volunteer-run, which means the majority of funds raised go directly into programming for individuals with Down syndrome. These programs support families across the San Diego region by offering:

  • Literacy programs
  • Fitness and wellness classes
  • Social skills groups
  • Career training and professional development
  • Educational tutoring and enrichment

Many families find that programs, resources, and tutoring offered by GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego help fill gaps left by traditional educational systems by providing specialized support, social opportunities, and community connection.

Inclusive programs and strong community support play a critical role in improving independence and quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. In 1983, the average life expectancy for someone with Down syndrome was just 25 years old. Today, thanks to advances in medical care, early intervention, and growing access to supportive programs and community resources like those offered at GiGi’s Playhouse, the average life expectancy has increased to over 60 years.

That’s exactly what the Donut Run helps make possible.
