Participant Spotlight – Celebrating Poppy’s First Year
Programs designed for infants and toddlers with Down syndrome play a powerful role in early development, especially for families in San Diego seeking support and connection, it can be hard to find. These early experiences nurture cognitive, social, and motor skills while empowering parents with knowledge, resources, and confidence. Just as importantly, they remind families that they are not alone. Building a supportive, uplifting community in San Diego is one of the main reasons GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego exists today, and we are so excited to share this special story.
Meet Poppy, one of our newest shining stars at GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego. At just one year old, Poppy has already shown incredible strength and resilience in her young age.
Poppy recently completed her final surgery at the end of January, and her family has been navigating a busy and emotional season. Through it all, Poppy continues to do what she does best, grow, thrive, and bring joy to everyone around her. Adding to the celebration, Poppy turned one year old this February!
We asked Poppy’s mom, Michelle, to share a bit about their journey.
How did you find GiGi’s?
“The nurse at Scripps La Jolla following NIPT and NT scan”
What is your favorite part of GiGi’s?
“The community of amazing people!!”
Have you noticed any “ah ha” moments with Poppy due to her interactions at GiGi’s?
“Not so much with Poppy, but for me. I see so many commonalities [in the community] with what she has gone through with her surgeries, for example, and do not feel so alone.”
Would you recommend GiGi’s to others and why?
“Absolutely!!! We came to GiGi’s once we had a positive screen on the NIPT and the nurse sent us the information. We were shocked and scared during our pregnancy.
We were welcomed warmly, and I appreciated one of the moms connecting with me to include me and help me feel more at ease, and to start enjoying my pregnancy.
My husband and I came to the LMNOP and music class before I gave birth and loved the community right away. Once Poppy was born, we have been regulars at GiGi’s, even connecting with Emily, Poppy’s OT for her monthly playgroups at GiGi’s too! We have made friends there, and we look forward to the next GiGi’s Donut Run! We can’t wait for more activities and community as she grows!!”
Is there anything you would like us to incorporate or do better?
“I can’t think of anything. I appreciate the social media presence!! It helps me stay in the know for what’s up next.”
Michelle’s words beautifully capture what GiGi’s Playhouse is all about — connection, reassurance, and community. While Poppy benefits from enriching early interactions, Michelle highlights something equally meaningful: the comfort of seeing shared experiences and feeling supported during life’s most uncertain moments.
LMNOP: Supporting Early Growth
Our LMNOP (Language Music N’ Our Peeps) program is specially designed for babies and toddlers with Down syndrome and their caregivers. Through music, movement, and play-based activities, LMNOP helps strengthen early communication, motor development, and social engagement. Parents and caregivers also gain valuable strategies they can continue using at home, turning everyday moments into opportunities for growth.
Beyond skill-building, LMNOP fosters something truly magical — friendships, encouragement, and a sense of belonging for families navigating similar journeys.
Poppy’s story is a celebration of resilience, love, and the power of community. We are honored to be part of her first year and cannot wait to watch her continue to shine.
