Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Clay

At GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do.

Every program, event, and meaningful connection made within our Playhouse is possible because of dedicated individuals who generously share their time, talents, and compassion. Volunteers help create the welcoming, supportive, and empowering environment that makes GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego so special for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Today, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on one of those incredible volunteers: Clay.

Finding a Place to Make a Difference

Clay first discovered GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego while looking for a volunteer opportunity close to home.

“I had been searching for a volunteer organization close to home, since my other volunteer activities require travel. I remembered a positive experience volunteering at an event for people with Down syndrome in elementary school and decided to search on the internet for local groups and found GiGi’s.”

What began as an online search quickly became a meaningful way for Clay to give back to his community.

Inspired by the Mission

When asked what drew him to GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, Clay was impressed by the scope of our work and the commitment to participant success.

“I was impressed with the breadth of programs, the education, number of GiGi’s locations and GiGi’s commitment to the development of their participants. GiGi’s really pours everything into their participants.”

From educational and therapeutic programs to social and career development opportunities, GiGi’s Playhouse is dedicated to helping individuals with Down syndrome achieve their greatest potential—and volunteers like Clay help make that mission possible every day.

Moments That Matter

One of the most rewarding parts of volunteering is the relationships that are built along the way.

“The highlight of volunteering has been walking into a room for an event and hearing a group of 20 people chanting and cheering my name! What a heart-touching way to be greeted. Also, the hugs from participants :)”

It’s these moments of connection, joy, and belonging that make volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse such a unique and fulfilling experience.

Looking Toward the Future

As someone who cares deeply about the GiGi’s community, Clay also shared an idea he’d love to see explored in the future.

“I think it would be great to see a program where GiGi’s brings its participants into more social events in the broader community like concerts, museums, theater, or perhaps even volunteering themselves at other organizations!”

His vision reflects one of the core values of GiGi’s Playhouse: fostering inclusion and creating opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to engage, contribute, and thrive within the broader community.

A Message for Future Volunteers

For anyone considering volunteering, Clay offers simple but powerful encouragement.

“Absolutely. If you have the capacity, and if you feel you have been blessed in this life, volunteering is a perfect way to show gratitude. It also is a very fulfilling, as service is a proven path to happiness!”

We couldn’t agree more.

Thank You, Clay

Clay’s enthusiasm, kindness, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our participants, families, and fellow volunteers. We are grateful for the time and energy he shares with our Playhouse community.
