Student Growth from a Tutor Perspective

Tutoring does more than just help students improve their academic performance, it helps them improve their standards for success altogether. During my time as a tutor, I could watch and measure not only my students’ academic performance, but their confidence and ability to persevere as well.

When students use tutors it can be discouraging because it makes them feel inadequate compared to their peers who may not use a tutor. In reality, tutors not only aid academic performance, but life skills as well. Confidence is a huge skill that tutors help improve in the lives of their students. While working with my student, I noticed each time he came in, he displayed more confidence behind his answers. He also started becoming more vocal in our sessions and displayed an overall sense of excitement for whatever lesson we had planned.

As the student’s confidence in their academic ability increases, they begin holding themselves to a higher standard. As students begin to set higher standards for themselves, it creates motivation to do better than they did the previous day. At GiGi’s, we always celebrate the “best of all” in every student when they accomplish something new, but it is even more rewarding to watch them set their own high standards for themselves, and reach it. As I went through tutor sessions with my student, I noticed he was becoming more frustrated with himself every time an answer was incorrect, and refused to move on until he answered it correctly. I was amazed and excited to see my student become self-motivating and confident, compared to the beginning of our tutoring when I had to consistently keep us on track.

Tutoring not only helps with improving struggles, but also helps identify them. As tutors get to know their student, they begin noticing habits and patterns in their learning that may have been overlooked in classroom environments. Once their habits and patterns have been identified, it serves as a focus point for future work. When the focus point for learning is established, it not only gives educators a path to teach, but gives students the ability to focus on and practice their subjects that need improving.

Tutors are one of the best tools for education. The one on one, hands on learning makes a substantial impact on the success of the student both educationally and socially. The confidence that they develop in themselves and their own ability has a direct effect on their success in life overall, and teaches that through hard work success can be reached.
