3 Days of Down syndrome Facts!

In case you missed it, GiGi’s is sharing 21 facts about Down Syndrome over the course of 3 days to celebrate World Down syndrome Day this Saturday, 3.21.20. Every day we are sharing 7 facts on our social media platforms. Below are the facts we shared today! We ask you to please like, share and comment on the ones that speak to you! Fact 8- People don’t have mild or severe Down syndrome. You either have it or you don’t. Ability is not dependent on the condition, but rather on the individual.

Fact 9- Children with Down syndrome go through the same milestones as other children, although those milestones may take longer to achieve. All children develop at their own pace!

Fact 10- Adults with Down syndrome work, run their own businesses, participate in decisions that affect them, have meaningful relationships,

vote and contribute to society.

Fact 11- Down syndrome occurs randomly at conception. It is not caused by anything done during pregnancy.

Fact 12- Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition.

Fact 13-There are three types of Down syndrome:

– Trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) accounts for 95% of cases

– Translocation accounts for about 4%

– Mosaicism accounts for about 1%

Fact 14- Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care and positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
