Why $321?

If you follow our Facebook page or admire our photos on Instagram, you may have seen several posts congratulating teams for raising $321. What you may not know is why people are setting up teams and why they’re encouraged to raise such an unusual amount.

The annual Superhero 5K, 1 Mile Walk and Kids Dash is one of our annual fundraisers and it is considered a peer-to-peer fundraiser. Which simply means inviting your peers to participate or support and hoping that they will invite their peers to join them. Families, groups, and companies that support the GiGi’s mission of changing the way the world views Down syndrome are encouraged to set up teams and invite their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers to join or support their team. It’s a way of saying…

“I support this cause and it would be great if you did too!”

Since this event is Superhero themed we refer to these teams as Superhero Teams but they each choose their own unique team name and share with their peers why GiGi’s is important to them.

Teams are initially encouraged to raise $321. Why $321?

Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is caused by an individual having 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. So, 3.21 or $321 in this case are numbers that mean something to us and our families.

As of today, there are 33 teams raising money to help GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities continue offering FREE programming for local individuals with Down syndrome. More importantly though they are also bringing awareness to and building acceptance of Down syndrome in the Quad Cities and surrounding area.

While we are one of 38 Playhouses which are spread out throughout the US and Mexico, the money that is raised locally stays local! Your registration fee, sponsorship, and/or donations impact individuals right here in Illinois and Iowa.
