Why GiGi’s | Eve

Eve Segel, GiGi's Playhouse InternMy name is Eve Segel, and I am a rising senior at Tulane University. I applied to intern at GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans this summer because I felt moved and motivated by the mission of the organization at large: “To change the way the world views Down syndrome and to send a global message of acceptance for all.”

GiGi’s Playhouse is run 99% by local volunteers, and every educational and therapeutic program they provide is free for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Although I just began my work with GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans, the dedication and compassion that I have seen demonstrated by those in the NOLA branch have already shown me that I came to the right place.

I am honored to learn from the experts at GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans and to help them fund the opening of a brick-and-mortar location in a city which has too long lacked sufficient resources for people with special needs. Individuals with Down syndrome face discrimination and exclusion every day, as society often does not recognize them as the talented, goal-oriented, and incredibly hardworking individuals that they are. GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans will fill a dire need in this city by working tirelessly to turn stigma into acceptance, by offering supportive guidance, and by promoting love for the differences that make us all unique!
