Trio of Literacy Tutors

Literacy Tutoring is an important part of the free, educational programming we provide for our Playhouse participants.  We currently have 17 tutor and students working virtually in one-on-one Literacy Tutoring!

Our tutors are a mix of retirees, professionals and college students.  We have many tutors decide to return for additional sessions because they love the connections they made with their student. Each week our tutors, who are fully trained by GiGi’s and have access to incredible resources, plan lessons that include Phonemic Awareness and Leveled Reading work.  Each tutor customizes the lessons to their student so their time together is most effective.

This month we wanted to highlight these three tutors, who also happen to be roommates!  Alyssa, Bailey and Taylor are all juniors at UW Madison and have been roommates for the past two years. Alyssa and Bailey originally started tutoring at GiGi’s because they were looking for an opportunity to work with kids since they want to eventually work in a career with kids and are going to school for Speech and Language Pathology.

Alyssa and Bailey shared why they returned for another session of tutoring and why they recruited their roommate Taylor to join them:  “We had such wonderful time with our first round of tutoring.  It was an amazing learning experience and very rewarding! Not only did we feel like we were able to make even a small difference in the lives of our students, but we especially learned a lot from them! We thought Taylor would also love this because she wants to work with kids as a school psychologist in the future. She is super excited, and we hope to help her along with this journey!”

We couldn’t be happier with the work our tutors do each week. For a tutor to not only return, but to recruit friends to also participate shows what a supportive environment we create for our volunteers.  Our volunteers never feel like they’re alone because of the collaboration between the GiGi’s Site Manger, Literacy co-coordinator, and their fellow tutors. We strive to have both our tutors AND students achieve!
