Finding Connection: Kate’s Story

Kate is a participant at GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster. She and her family first learned about GiGi’s through members of their community, who encouraged them to look into it. Although Kate has been attending for less than a year, the impact it has had on both her and her family has already been tremendous. What started as simply trying out a new program quickly became a place where Kate feels accepted, supported, and happy.

Kate has Down Syndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD), a condition that has caused her to lose skills she previously had. DSRD is still not widely understood, and researchers continue to study its causes, symptoms, and long-term effects. In some cases, it can be triggered by stressful events, though every individual’s experience is different.

For Kate and her family, DSRD has brought many challenges. It has affected her ability to communicate, and it has changed parts of her personality and happiness. Watching someone they love lose pieces of themselves has been very difficult for her family.

Despite those challenges, Kate’s family has seen meaningful progress since getting involved at GiGi’s. Her mom shared that GiGi’s “fulfills Kate.” She says that she genuinely looks forward to being there and enjoys the programs and social interactions with other participants and volunteers. Since joining, Kate has become much more expressive with her emotions, something her family had not seen in a long time due to DSRD. Even small moments of connection, joy, and self-expression have meant so much to them.

Beyond the impact on Kate herself, GiGi’s has also become an important support system for her family. One of the hardest parts of navigating DSRD is how isolating it can feel, especially because the condition is not well known or widely discussed. Through GiGi’s, Kate’s family has been able to meet other families who understand the challenges they are facing. Having a community of people who can relate and listen has made a huge difference in helping them feel less alone.

Kate’s mom is especially grateful that Kate has a space where she can be herself. At GiGi’s, she is surrounded by people who accept her without judgment and celebrate her for who she is. That sense of belonging has helped rebuild confidence and happiness that had been diminished by the effects of regression. Her family believes that an environment of compassion and understanding has played a major role in the positive changes they have seen in her.

When Kate was first diagnosed with Down syndrome as a baby, her family made a commitment that they would never place limits on her because of her diagnosis. They wanted her to have every opportunity to grow, connect, and experience life. Although DSRD has brought unexpected hardships, they continue to focus on the moments of joy and progress that GiGi’s has made possible.

Volunteers at GiGi’s share that over the past year they have enjoyed getting to know Kate and watching her grow and achieve in various programs she participates in, including Achievers, GiGi’s Kitchen, GiGiFIT, and Fantastic Friends. She has also been able to attend and participate in events like Noon Year’s Eve and the Gala. This spring, volunteers awarded Kate as the Chef of the Month because of the growth and independence they have observed in her. She’s great at following directions to complete activities like cutting vegetables, shredding cheese, and more!

At the culminating GiGi’s Kitchen Picnic, participants took turns going on stage and sharing their name and favorite recipe from the session. When called, Kate was excited to take her turn. When given choices of visual recipes from the session, she indicated that the ‘Grilled Cheese’ week was her favorite. Then, she echoed the volunteer to vocally say an approximation of ‘grilled cheese’. We are very proud of Kate and enjoy having her at GiGi’s.

Kate’s family is deeply thankful for all of the volunteers and staff at GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster. Their patience, kindness, and genuine care for every participant are what make it so special. Through their support, Kate has found a place where she feels encouraged, valued, and understood, and her family will always be grateful for the difference that has made in her life.
