A ‘Sign’ of Progress: Visibility, Community, and the Power of Acceptance

After two years of planning, persistence, and partnership, GiGi’s Playhouse Canton officially has signage at the end of our road – and it’s so much more than just a sign.

Since opening our doors in April 2019, our Playhouse has operated without visible signage from the main road. Families often struggled to find us, volunteers missed our turn, and even delivery drivers looped the block. While our impact inside the Playhouse was growing, we remained hidden in plain sight, but that all changed this July.

This milestone began with a simple question asked several years ago during a conversation with our neighbors at The Great Escape. At the time, the idea of having our name added to their existing sign felt like a long shot. Still, we asked. What followed was months (then years) of hopeful follow-up, relationship building, and patient waiting.

Then earlier this year, the unexpected happened: a phone call came from their corporate office in Chicago. Several conversations later, the dream of a sign suddenly became reality. In recent months, we’ve watched The Great Escape go through a rebranding of their own. From a resurfaced parking lot to a painted building, it’s been exciting to see the transformation unfold next door. Each new change brought a little more anticipation as we peeked to the end of the road, waiting for the sign to change. “Could we be next?” And finally, we were.

A Shared Celebration

After the installation was complete, a simple walk next door to say thank you turned into something more memorable: the entire team at The Great Escape was just as excited as we were to see our name up on the sign. That moment of shared celebration made this milestone feel even more special. It wasn’t just our win, it was ours, together.

Their genuine enthusiasm reflects the strength of the community partnerships we strive to build – relationships rooted in kindness, collaboration, and a shared belief in creating something meaningful.

Initially, The Great Escape and their sign company offered to cover part of the cost, with GiGi’s Playhouse covering the rest – a generous gesture we were truly grateful for. After learning more about our mission and seeing the impact of our work, their corporate leadership in Chicago reached back out with something extraordinary: they offered to fully fund the entire project.

No strings. No conditions. Just an incredibly generous gift rooted in community and belief in our mission of acceptance for all.

Why Visibility Matters

To some, it may look like a small addition to the neighborhood. But to us, it represents growth, access, and inclusion. With this new visibility:

  • More families will find our Playhouse and the free, life-changing programs we offer
  • More volunteers, donors, and supporters can discover and connect with our mission
  • More individuals with Down syndrome can be celebrated, empowered, and embraced

The sign is just one step forward, but it’s an important one; it reflects how far we’ve come and the incredible things that happen when a community comes together to say “yes” to acceptance and opportunity.

Be Part of What’s Next

This sign is more than a symbol – it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when local businesses invest in their community. If your organization shares our values of inclusion, empowerment, and impact, we’d love to partner with you.

  • Sponsor a Program or Event: Align your brand with purposeful, free programming for individuals with Down syndrome, from literacy and fitness to career development.
  • Coordinate a Volunteer Day: Engage your team through a meaningful service opportunity at the Playhouse.
  • Provide In-Kind Services or Resources: From printing and marketing to supplies or facility support, your expertise can directly power our mission.
  • Join Our Mission Through Workplace Giving or Matching Gifts: Encourage your team to give back with matched donations or payroll giving programs.
    • If you don’t have Workplace Giving set up, you can still be a monthly contributor by becoming a 3.21 Champion.

If your business is ready to make a difference like The Great Escape did, we’d love to start a conversation.
