Volunteer Spotlight: Edgar Herrera
At GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, our community is built by people who lead with heart, generosity, and a commitment to inclusion. This month, we are proud to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Edgar Herrera, whose passion for community and family inspired an unforgettable fundraiser in support of our Playhouse.
Edgar recently brought together the San Diego community through a special San Diego Padres-themed boat cruise fundraiser, combining fun, connection, and generosity to raise funds that directly support the programs and mission of GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego. His creativity and leadership helped turn a great idea into a meaningful event that made a real impact.
For Edgar, giving back is deeply personal. His younger brother, Diego, who has Down syndrome, has been a powerful inspiration in his life. Edgar shared that one of the reasons he wanted to get involved was to help Diego feel more connected to a community where he can thrive, build confidence, and have fun.

“What made me want to volunteer is really personal to me. My little brother, Diego, has Down syndrome, and I want to help get him more involved with the community and with activities that can really benefit him.
Sometimes he can be a little shy and tends to keep to himself, but I want him to see that he has a whole community around him. I want him to be around people who understand him, who are like him, and who can help him feel comfortable, confident, and included while also having fun.“
Edgar first connected with GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego after hearing wonderful things from a close friend whose son had been involved in programs. He later attended a painting activity with Diego, and that visit made an immediate impression.
“Right away, I could feel how close-knit and welcoming everything was.”
That special day also led to meeting new friends and building even more connections within the community. Diego has especially enjoyed spending time with his best friend, Jack, showing how meaningful friendships can grow in a welcoming space like GiGi’s.
When asked what he loves most about GiGi’s Playhouse, Edgar spoke about the warmth and genuine care he has seen from everyone involved.
“I really admire the warmth, sense of community, and genuine care that everyone seems to bring.”
He also reflected on why spaces like GiGi’s Playhouse matter so much to families like his.
“It means a lot not only because of my brother, but because I know how meaningful it is to see him smile, open up, and enjoy himself in a place where he can truly be himself.”
Edgar, thank you for your generosity, leadership, and the love you show through your actions. Your support helps create opportunities, strengthen connections, and make our community even brighter.
We are so grateful to have you as part of the GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego family.
