Literacy & Math at Home

Our Math & Literacy Coordinators compiled a few activities that you can use at home to keep the learning going in addition to having fun too!

Math Activities

The following math games can be played with a regular deck of cards!

War

2 players (greater/less than)

Determine which of the above you are going to play

Greater than is the example below:

Remove aces and face cards from deck

  • Deal out all the cards, keep them face down
  • Each person turns a card face up
  • Determine whose card is greater than, have your child tell you 9 is greater than 2.  Whoever has the card that is greater than they win the cards.  Play continues until 1 person runs out of cards.

Movement and Math

Deck of cards with aces and face cards removed

  • Draw a card and _____ (fill in the blank with movements below) that many times.
  • Movements:
  • Hop, pat your tummy, touch your toes, tiptoe walk, big steps, march, flap your arms etc.
  • Be sure to have your child count out loud as they do the movement! This is not only good math fun it’ll also burn off some steam!

Literacy Activities

The following are all activities that can be adjusted according to the individual person. Use the letter, word, or sentences.  The idea is that if your child is at a letter level, use letters, if reading words, use words, or if reading sentences, use sentences.

  • Label items with sticky notes so your child sees object words every time they look at that object. This gives them multiple exposures to see that word in print and multiple exposures help to learn and master recognition. (Label the refrigerator, stove, bathroom, doors, chairs, mirrors, etc)
  • Dress up as your favorite character and share your favorite book. Use different voices to keep it fun!
  • Record your child reading and send it to a friend or relative (or use FaceTime).
  • Ask a relative/friend to read a book to your child via recording or FaceTime
  • Make a Treasure Hunt. Your child reads the clues which eventually take them to a treasure (a snack, trinket, or coupon for favorite activity, etc).
  • Make a scavenger hunt. Your child reads each clue, finds the item, and takes a picture with a phone or iPad. This can be turned into a large motor activity too. Have them hop, jump, run, etc to the next clue or item.
  • Have your child draw a picture and dictate a story about it. You write the words, reread it to your child, and finally have your child read it.
  • Write words on cards. Spread the cards onto the floor. Say a word and have your child jump onto the word.
  • Write words on sticky notes and post them around the house. Let your child find a word, read it, and stick all the notes in one place.
  • Write a note and put it on your child’s pillow to be read at bedtime.
  • Write a note on the mirror to be read in the morning.
  • So many people are quarantined at this time, draw pictures or write letters, address them, and take a ride so your child can mail them.
  • Write a happy note and stick it on a neighbor’s door, on your mailbox for the mail carrier, or on your door for the UPS/FedEx driver.
  • Read and follow recipes to make a snack or meal. We’re all snacking anyway!
  • Look at a newspaper or magazine and cut out words your child knows or cut out letters and make words to read.
  • Write down facts about each family member. Have your child read the facts and guess which family member the fact is about. This can be a fun game for the entire family!
  • For very young children, sort items by color, shape or size (socks, buttons, pens, canned goods, etc).
  • Keep a journal each day. List your favorite activity for the day and a goal for tomorrow!
  • Break out the nerf gun! Write words, letters, or sentences on sticky notes.  Stick them to the wall or door.  Use a nerf gun to shoot them while identifying them.
