Society is increasingly providing, to individuals with Down Syndrome, resources tailored to enrich their lives. As this happens, we all learn lessons about accomplishment, ability, compassion, and what makes every human valuable. Researchers, meanwhile, are finding new ways not only to help Down Syndrome patients achieve their dreams, but are also discovering special skills — such as non-verbal communication and unique kinds of emotional awareness — which the condition seems to engender. We speak with a leading advocate, a neuroscientist, and a mother and her daughter with Down Syndrome, about the insights of this sometimes beautiful, sometimes challenging, medical condition.
Britt Sady is the Executive Director of GiGi’s Playhouse New York, a community and education center specifically designed to celebrate and support individuals with Down Syndrome.
Dr. Stephen Ginsbergis on the forefront of study of Down Syndrome. He is a Research Scientist at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Department of Physiology & Neuroscience at New York University Langone Medical Center.
Tracy Nixon and Laura Lyleare a mother-daughter combo, Tracy a leading advocate for Down Syndrome individuals, among them Laura, an 11-year old student who speaks with eloquence and joy about her life and about the condition.
About the image:
The Adoration of the Christ Child is a Netherlandish work of art from the early 16th century, painter unknown, which many scholars believe depicts an angel with Down Syndrome. It is part of the collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

last sundays gospel was about the miracle of the loaves and fish and how Jesus fed a group of 5000 plus who came to hear Him speak and teach ! when the young shepherd boy approached Jesus with his humble basket of food (5loaves and 2fish)to offer, many laughed and said its impossible to feed all these people with such meager food.but Jesus told then to distribute this amongst the thousands.as it turned out all ate to their fill and 12 baskets were filled with left overs! as I was listening to britt sady and laura lyle and her mother I realized exactly what the above gospel was all about! bring to the Lord all we have and He will do the rest!God Bless You all and in everything you do ! sincerely ,mary ann healy ,grand mother of 5 beautiful grandchildren of which one has down syndrome and has raised our level of comapassion ,understanding and tolerance of differences, patience ,awareness of faith in god and charity towards all and especially dignity of human life as the greatest gift of God.
