Volunteer Spotlight: Gina’s Tutoring Experience

At GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans, we’re proud to offer free 1:1 Math and Literacy Tutoring for individuals with Down syndrome ages 3 and up, and it’s all made possible by the incredible dedication of our volunteer tutors! Their time, encouragement, and passion help our participants build confidence, achieve their goals, and discover a love of learning.

This month, we’re excited to spotlight one of our amazing tutors, Gina Bertucci! Gina has made a meaningful impact through her dedication and compassion, and we’re so grateful for everything she does. Read on as Gina shares a little about her experience as a tutor and what volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse means to her. Thank you, Gina, for helping make our tutoring program possible and for the lasting difference you make in the lives of our participants and families!

When I was in high school (many years ago!) I was a peer tutor in an adapted physical education class. During the three years I participated, I formed many close bonds with my fellow classmates as we learned ways to modify activities to meet their physical capabilities. The experience taught me to focus on our similarities, not our differences and it helped me recognize the potential in everyone. This new perspective remained with me throughout my life.

I have interacted with individuals with Down syndrome over the years but have never worked with them on improving a specific skill. I was looking for volunteer opportunities and when I came across the tutoring program at Gigi’s Playhouse, I immediately knew I would enjoy the experience. Prior to starting, I was quite nervous but after being introduced to the staff, seeing the facility and having my first math sessions with two awesome students, I knew Gigi’s was where I wanted to be!

During tutoring, the young ladies and I share stories and laugh with each other as we work to improve math skills and apply them to everyday concepts in life. Each time I begin a tutoring session, my goal is to present engaging activities that will have my students excited to return the next week. Each time I complete a session, I am inspired by their progress and enthusiasm and feel thankful for the time I spend with them.

In my free time I enjoy visiting with friends and family, gardening and listening to WWOZ!
