Meet Isabella Alfaro

Hi, my name is Isabella Alfaro, and I am an international senior student at Tulane University. I am thrilled to work as a Marketing Intern for GiGi’s Playhouse New Orleans throughout the 2021 Fall Semester!

GiGi’s Playhouse started in 2003 as a Down Syndrome Awareness Center in Illinois, and with its incredible work, it has managed to grow into the only international network of Down Syndrome Achievement Centers. As I kept learning more about GiGi’s Playhouse, the more I was drawn to its mission, which invited me to educate myself about Down syndrome while also spreading that knowledge and acceptance. All of their programs, educational and therapeutic, are freely accessible to all those in need, which helps build credibility to their efforts of genuinely wanting to make a difference in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. With GiGi’s efforts, they have been able to make thousands of families feel safe in moments of uncertainty, and like they have a second home and family full of joy, and happiness to go to. GiGi’s Playhouse is a wholesome place because it not only educates and encourages acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome, but also sends a message of acceptance to each and every unique individual in the world.

Since a little girl, I’ve always enjoyed assisting individuals in need as well as those with special needs via student groups at my school, but now that I will be working directly inside the organization it will be a completely new experience that will help me expand my horizons and ideals. With such a diverse community in New Orleans these days, it is exciting to know that with my work the organization will be able to better serve Spanish-speaking parents and adults with Down syndrome, as well as helping create awareness & acceptance around the Spanish-speaking community. Even though I will not be working directly at the location with individuals with Down syndrome, but online behind the scenes, it will be a very meaningful opportunity for me. I can’t wait to see how much I am able to offer the organization over the next couple months and help break barriers and stigmas around New Orleans and my community!

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Isabella Alfaro y soy estudiante internacional en la Universidad de Tulane. Estoy encantada de poder trabajar como pasante de marketing para GiGi’s Playhouse Nueva Orleans durante este próximo semestre de otoño 2021.  
 
GiGi’s Playhouse comenzó en 2003 como un Centro de Concientización sobre el Síndrome de Down en Illinois y, con su increíble trabajo, ha logrado convertirse en la única red internacional de Centros de Logros para el Síndrome de Down.

A medida que fui aprendiendo más sobre GiGi’s Playhouse, más me atraía su misión, que me invitaba a educarme sobre el síndrome de Down y al mismo tiempo difundir conocimiento y aceptación. Todos sus programas, educativos y terapéuticos, son de libre acceso para todos aquellos que los necesiten, lo que ayuda a generar credibilidad en sus esfuerzos de querer genuinamente hacer una diferencia en las vidas de las personas con síndrome de Down y sus familias. Con los esfuerzos de GiGi’s, han logrado que miles de familias se sientan seguras en momentos de incertidumbre, como si tuvieran un segundo hogar y una familia llena de alegría y felicidad a la que asistir. GiGi’s Playhouse es un lugar increíble porque no solo educa y fomenta la aceptación de las personas con síndrome de Down, sino que también envía un mensaje de aceptación de todas y cada una de las personas del mundo.  

Desde pequeña, siempre me ha gustado ayudar a personas necesitadas y aquellas personas con necesidades especiales a través de distintos grupos en mi colegio, pero ahora que estaré trabajando directamente dentro de la organización, será una experiencia completamente nueva que me ayudará a expandir mis horizontes e ideales. Con una comunidad tan diversa como la que hay en Nueva Orleans, es emocionante saber que con mi trabajo la organización podrá servir mejor a los padres y adultos de habla hispana con síndrome de Down, además de ayudar a crear conciencia y aceptación alrededor de aquellos individuos de habla hispana. Aunque no trabajaré directamente en el lugar con aquellos individuos, sino detrás de escena en línea, será una oportunidad muy significativa para mí. ¡No puedo esperar a ver cuánto puedo ofrecer a la organización durante los próximos meses y ayudar a romper barreras y estigmas en Nueva Orleans y mi comunidad!
