GiGi’s One-On-One Tutoring Program

Child with Down syndrome learning to readGiGi’s Playhouse One-on-One Literacy Tutoring Program uses the Raising Robust Readers (RRR) reading program.  RRR was developed by Judy O’Halloran, a teacher who is the mother of an adult son with Down syndrome.  She was concerned many years ago that her son Casey (a teen at the time) was on track to graduate from high school functionally illiterate.  As a result, she began to research different reading learning methods and taking primary education courses to see if she had missed anything.  She had a breakthrough when she met a woman at an educational conference who said that he might be helped by using an Orton-Gillingham method (phonics).

After researching this method, she and her friend Marilee Senior developed RRR which is a multi-sensory way to learn reading through the application of phonics patterns.  They use fun songs and jingles to teach the 72 phonograms for reading.  She taught her son to read, and now he uses reading every day in his job at a courthouse.

GiGi’s Playhouse partnered with Raising Robust readers to create the One-on-One tutoring Signature program.  The GiGi’s Playhouse program, which is meant to complement and not replace school learning, focuses on teaching 12 of the most key phonics patterns to help people with Down syndrome read.  Watch the video below to learn more about the program.
