Recently, we took on an exciting new challenge by organizing our first-ever “Learn to Bike” event for our teen participants. At GiGi’s Playhouse Madison, we’re always looking for ways to empower our community and create opportunities for growth. This event was made possible through a partnership with three incredible local organizations, DSAW-SC, Wisconsin Bike Fed and Madison Adaptive Cycling, each bringing our shared passion and their own expertise to the table. The result was an inspiring afternoon filled with independence, confidence-building, and celebration as our participants got to experience the joy of biking.

The event was designed to give our teens the chance to try various adaptive bikes and find the one that worked best for them. For some, this was their first time ever attempting to ride a bike, making the experience both thrilling and challenging. Biking is an excellent activity for people with Down syndrome, as it helps to strengthen muscles by working on balance and core strength—two areas that can be particularly difficult due to hypotonia (low muscle tone). However, it also adds to the complexity of learning to ride. Our goal was to create an environment where participants could explore biking at their own pace, supported by the knowledge and encouragement of our partners and peers.

Throughout the day, it was incredible to see the progress that each teen made. As they became more comfortable on the bikes, their confidence grew, and so did their smiles. The event wasn’t just about learning a new skill; it was about gaining independence and proving to themselves what they were capable of. The support from our partner organizations was instrumental in this, as they provided the expertise needed to adapt the bikes to each individual’s needs, ensuring a positive and successful experience for everyone.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was the sense of camaraderie and celebration that developed among the participants. As each teen made strides in their biking abilities, the group cheered them on, creating an atmosphere of mutual encouragement and shared achievement. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the importance of celebrating each step forward, no matter how small.

We’re already looking forward to running future programs like this, expanding to include additional age ranges. Our first “Learn to Bike” event was a tremendous success, and we’re excited to continue offering opportunities for our participants to grow, learn, and, most importantly, have fun.
