A Hole In One: Career Development Skills In Action!

On Monday, August 18th GiGi’s Playhouse National Office hosted our Annual Golf Outing at Ivanhoe Golf Club. Each year, the adults in the Career Development Programs get a chance to come volunteer at the event, working hard during the day spreading the message about changing the way the world views Down syndrome!
This year, the adult participants worked at the Hugs & Mugs table, sold raffle tickets, monitored the Hole In One contest, monitored the Longest Putt contest, greeted golfers and volunteers, and interacted with the golfers. While at Hugs & Mugs, the adults scooped 3 flavors of gelato that were then handed out to the golfers to help keep them cool on a hot hot day! This worked on a variety of skills we learn in Hugs & Mugs with our certifications like customer service, appropriate vs. Inappropriate behaviors at work, flexibility, and much more.
The golf outing gives the adults a chance to not only a chance to become self advocates for not only themselves, but other people with Down syndrome, but also gives the golfers a chance to see adults with Down syndrome in the community not only working, but thriving and being independent! Exposing the community to how hard working and skilled individuals with Down syndrome are is so important to change the way that employers see hiring the population! The National Golf Outing was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered, and we can’t wait for next year!
