3/21 World Down syndrome Day Celebration

Down syndrome is defined as “a congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect, causing intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities including short stature and a broad facial profile. It arises from a defect involving chromosome 21, usually an extra copy (trisomy-21).” To the lucky few, Down syndrome is much more than that. On March 21, 3/21, GiGi’s Playhouse Des Moines celebrated all that Down syndrome is. Walking into the playhouse, everyone was welcomed with a thick atmosphere full of love, and acceptance. Each family knew that this is a place that they could celebrate the differences that the extra 21st chromosome brings to their loved ones. Families gathered at GiGi’s Playhouse to play games, hangout, meet new people, and eat walking tacos. Most importantly, people gathered to celebrate Down syndrome.

At the Playhouse, there were blow up toy microphones, guitars and saxophones available for people to enjoy as they rocked on. We were surrounded with people who rocked an extra chromosome, and what is a better way to show that off, than to rock on with some musical instruments! People also signed a poster to pledge to live the “Generation G” way, with acceptance, generosity and kindness. Dinner was served, and bellies were filled with walking tacos, and cake. At 6:30, the celebration continued with a balloon drop! Kids were screaming as they jumped to catch the balloons. This was a perfect way to wrap up the party. At 7:00 the party ended, but the celebration will continue.

Down syndrome makes a person different, not less. GiGi’s Playhouse is a place where those differences are celebrated. 3/21 has come and gone, but the love for each individual with Down syndrome remains. People will continue to shout the worth of their loved ones who rock an extra chromosome, and celebrate what makes them different.
