Story of a GiGi’s Volunteer

We say it over and over – that GiGi’s could not exist without the dedication of our volunteers – with more than 60 that donate nearly 250 hours of their time to our Playhouse in any given month. Today, I introduce to you one of those special volunteers: Pyper.

I first met Pyper at the 2024 GiGi’s Breakfast with Santa Christmas Party, when she and her mother, Renee, volunteered to be Santa’s elves. In time, I started seeing more of Pyper volunteering and I couldn’t ignore the impact she was having on our participants. Recently, she agreed to play a bit of Q&A with me.

John: How did you first learn about GiGi’s?
Pyper: I first learned about GiGi’s Playhouse through a friend at school who has Down syndrome named Mason.

John: What was your initial impression of GiGi’s when you walked into our Playhouse for the first time?
Pyper: I immediately felt very welcome when I walked into GiGi’s Playhouse for the first time. Everyone there is very uplifting and positive. I always feel a sense of belonging when I am there.

John: What is a story about Gigi’s that you tell everyone you know?
Pyper: One thing I always tell people about GiGi’s Playhouse is my friend Max. When I met him and his family, we instantly formed a bond. He taught me to have a positive outlook on life no matter what you are going through. He has had to endure more in his life than most people his age, but he always comes to GiGi’s with a smile on his face and a great attitude. He will forever be a person who has made an impact on my life.

John: What is the biggest misconception that people have about people with Down syndrome?
Pyper: I think the biggest misconception is that people with Down syndrome are “different”. In reality, they are just like anybody else. They want to learn new things, have fun, and feel included, which is something I think everyone wants.

John: Why do you volunteer here?
Pyper: I volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse because I have made it a goal in my life to celebrate all abilities. Every time I leave the Playhouse, I feel encouraged and have a better outlook on life.

John: What else do you want to share?
Pyper: I want everyone to understand the importance of volunteering, especially teens, because together we can make a difference. Without people volunteering, places like GiGi’s Playhouse wouldn’t exist.
