Reflections from a GiGi’s Playhouse: Tatum
Hello, I’m Tatum Aragon, a senior at Drake University. I was an intern/volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse for the Fall semester and it was a great experience. I was proud to be part of as many GiGi’s programs as possible, but I was most eager to do this Fall was to tutor. Even though I knew it would be rewarding, I’ll admit that I was a bit scared at first.
What I didn’t expect was just how much I would grow from the experience. Every session reminded me that tutoring isn’t about being perfect; it’s about showing up with patience, compassion, and a willingness to learn alongside the participant you’re supporting. Watching a learner’s confidence develop, celebrating small victories, and building real connections has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience.
Tutoring at GiGi’s has pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way possible. I was pleasantly surprised by how natural it came to me. GiGi’s provides you with all the tools you need to be successful and to cater to your student. With each session, it became easier and easier. I’ve had the pleasure of tutoring both a younger participant and an older one, and while I expected it to be challenging to switch between the two, I quickly learned that the key is simply meeting each person where they are. Every week is about encouraging growth, whether it’s big or small, and celebrating progress in whatever form it takes.
If you feel the pull to be part of something bigger than yourself, I can’t recommend GiGi’s Playhouse enough. Whether you volunteer in one of the many incredible programs or step into a tutoring role to support their free one-on-one services, getting involved is truly worth it. For me, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
