Each month, we celebrate a participant who embodies the heart of GiGi’s Playhouse, and this month our Best of All is Michael. To highlight his incredible growth, we invited his speech-language pathologist, Mrs. Amanda Simon, to share a glimpse into his journey. Through her eyes, we see just how far Michael has come and the bright path ahead.
.
When Michael and his mom, Liz, first came through the doors of GiGi’s Playhouse, they joined us for LMNOP. Like many new experiences, it took time for Michael to feel comfortable in a group setting. At times, the environment felt overwhelming, and there were days when it was simply too much. But even in those early moments, there was something steady and hopeful – Michael kept showing up.
When he began speech therapy with Amanda, the focus was on helping Michael feel safe, confident, and ready to explore. From the very beginning, it was a true team effort. Together, they thoughtfully shaped each session around Michael’s needs – meeting in the sensory room to create a more calming, consistent space, incorporating music he loved, and introducing supports like a weighted vest to help him feel more regulated and secure.
.
And little by little, week after week, Michael began to shine brighter and brighter.
His confidence has grown in the most meaningful ways. Where there was once hesitation, there is now excitement. Michael walks into his sessions ready to rock – engaged, curious, and eager to participate. He lights up during familiar songs, joins in with gestures and signs, and recently signed “more,” a moment that felt especially exciting and meaningful.
He is making eye contact, smiling, and connecting. He’s reaching for items to make choices, following directions, and allowing support as he builds new skills. He’s even helping clean up when asked and identifying objects when given options, which shows just how much he is learning and understanding.
Then, there are the moments that say so much without needing many words, like the first time he held Amanda’s hand to walk out of the therapy room, or how he calmly waited while mom and Amanda connected after the session. These small but powerful moments reflect a growing sense of trust, comfort, and independence.
Most of all, Michael is enjoying his time. You can see it in his smile, his engagement, and the way he connects during each session. Michael’s journey is a reminder that growth doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built through consistency, creativity, and belief – and Michael is showing us all just how powerful that can be.
Michael, the growth you’ve shown over these past weeks has been nothing short of incredible. Your joy, determination, and willingness to keep trying inspire everyone around you, and it’s been so special to watch your confidence shine brighter each day. We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you continue to do.
