June’s Letter from the President: Board Member’s Needed

The month of June means hello summer and hello to all of you!
Dear GiGi’s Playhouse Tampa Families, Volunteers, and Supporters,
As the newly appointed President of the Board, I’m both honored and energized to step into this role here in Tampa. The energy of summer is upon us- bringing warmth, sunshine, and renewed motivation to nurture our incredible community.
As not only a member of this board for the past four years but also a parent to my amazing son Mason- who has Down syndrome and is now seven- I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many of you throughout the years. Whether through programs, events, or casual hallway conversations, those connections have meant the world to me. I’m truly excited about the opportunity to shake the hands of many more families, volunteers, and supporters as we continue to grow together.
I’m also thrilled to announce that Jessica Silber, who has served as our Board Secretary, has been appointed as Vice President of the Board. Jessica has been an incredible advocate and leader within our Playhouse community, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have her partnership and support as we continue to move forward.
Like so many other Playhouses across the country, GiGi’s Playhouse Tampa is more than just a building. It’s a safe and joyful place where individuals with Down syndrome are celebrated and empowered every day. From purposeful programming to unforgettable events, we are creating a space of growth, achievement, and belonging for every family who walks through our doors.
But we cannot do it alone.
Right now, the Playhouse is in significant need of a Treasurer, a Secretary, and additional Board Members. We are at a critical point, and we want to be candid with you- GiGi’s cannot thrive without the very active involvement of families like yours. If you find value in what GiGi’s offers- whether it’s educational support, community connection, or a loving environment for your child- we are asking you: please, please find a way to lend a hand, your talents, or your voice. In the day- to- day hustle of life, it’s easy to think, “Someone else will step up,” or “Someone else is probably better suited.” But truly- if not you, then who? GiGi’s Playhouse Tampa is 99% volunteer- run. That includes our committees and board members. We don’t need perfection- we need people who care. Passion, reliability, and a heart for this mission go farther than any resume ever could.
What does a Board Member do?
Board members play a vital role in the health and sustainability of the Playhouse. Responsibilities include:
– Attending one monthly board meeting (in person or virtual)
– Serving on at least one committee (e.g., finance, events, outreach)
– Supporting fundraising efforts and building relationships in the community
– Being a strong advocate for the Playhouse’s mission
The Treasurer specifically oversees financial reporting, budgeting, and coordination with our accountant.
The Secretary is responsible for keeping accurate records of board meetings, organizing documentation, and ensuring effective communication across board and staff.
If you or someone you know has experience in these areas- or simply a strong desire to make a difference- this is a meaningful way to contribute.
Summer Highlights:
– Our 10-week summer tutoring session is underway, and it’s amazing to see our participants making strides and building confidence.
– We’re planning some exciting family workshops and community meetups, so keep an eye out for upcoming dates and opportunities to connect.
I’d love to hear from you!
Whether you have ideas to make the Playhouse stronger, feedback on programs, or simply a story about how GiGi’s Tampa has uplifted your child or your family- please reach out. These conversations matter. They inspire us, inform our direction, and remind us exactly why we do what we do. My door (and inbox!) is always open.
With heartfelt thanks and summertime hope,
Mike Bucalo
