Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie – Finding Purpose, Love, and Community at GiGi’s Playhouse

Since November 2025, Jackie has been sharing her time and talents with GiGi’s Playhouse Syracuse, volunteering with GiGiFIT for Adults and lending a helping hand with preparations for the upcoming Golf Tournament. What began as a desire to learn more about Down syndrome and support her niece, Izzy Charles, has grown into something deeply meaningful.

“My niece Izzy has Down syndrome, and she is the absolute light of my life,” Jackie shares. “I attended a class with her and fell in love with the entire environment and the people at GiGi’s. I wanted to become more involved so I could better understand Down syndrome and gain awareness of what life might look like for Izzy as she gets older.”

While her original goal was to better support Izzy, Jackie soon discovered that GiGi’s Playhouse would have a profound impact on her own life.

“I walk in the door at GiGi’s Playhouse and each time I do, I feel this love that is so overwhelming and powerful. Honestly, it has changed my life.”

One of Jackie’s greatest joys has been building relationships with the participants and watching them grow.

“I love seeing the milestones our members achieve and witnessing their growth. To be a part of someone’s journey at GiGi’s is fulfilling in a way that’s hard to put into words. It’s truly a privilege.”

One memory, in particular, stands out.

“I remember my second or third time walking into the building. Before I even reached the stairs, I heard one of the members yell, ‘Jackie’s here!’ That moment meant so much to me. I hope our members recognize the impact they’ve had on my life and how much they’ve helped me through some difficult times simply by being with them. They are an inspiration to me.”

When asked what she would say to someone considering volunteering, Jackie’s answer is simple but powerful:

“It is life changing. It will show you a love that you’ve never seen. It changes the lens of how you view the world and gives you such profound purpose.”

Above all, Jackie says she feels accepted and loved at GiGi’s Playhouse.

“I love being at GiGi’s. I feel accepted just as I am, and I believe that’s all they want too. I hope they know how much I love being there and the impact it has had on me as a person.”

Volunteers like Jackie embody the spirit of GiGi’s Playhouse Syracuse—creating meaningful relationships, celebrating every achievement, and reminding us that acceptance and love truly change lives. We are so grateful for Jackie and the joy, compassion, and dedication she brings to our Playhouse family.

Thank you, Jackie, for making a difference and for sharing your heart with our community! 💜💙
