Mary Jo’s Story

When GiGi’s Playhouse Syracuse first opened its doors, Mary Jo read about it in the news and immediately thought of her son and his friend David, who had Down Syndrome. She knew it would be a place filled with acceptance, community, and opportunity. Her first visit to the Playhouse was during a very personal event—David’s family hosted a gathering there to make bracelets in support of his fight against Osteosarcoma. After his passing, a close friend who served on the board asked if Mary Jo would consider joining in David’s honor. That decision became the start of a lifelong connection.

Since then, Mary Jo has been deeply involved with GiGi’s Playhouse. She not only serves as Board President but also led the GiGiFIT Kids program for two years and remains a key member of the GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge 5K committee.

“I have so many favorite memories,” she shared. “Seeing participants in GiGiFIT every week and the pure joy they bring when walking into the Playhouse is something I’ll never forget. Another highlight was our 10-Year Anniversary Celebration—a weeklong series of events honoring each program and ending with an unforgettable birthday bash!”

The Impact of GiGi’s

Being part of GiGi’s Playhouse has been transformational not only for her, but also for her entire family.

“I have always known what acceptance was, but being a part of GiGi’s has really shown not only me, but my family what it truly means. Our families know they can come to GiGi’s for anything, and we are always there with open arms.”

Her involvement has even inspired her husband to lead efforts within his company to increase awareness about individuals with disabilities in the banking industry. All three of her children—and their significant others—have also volunteered at the Playhouse, making GiGi’s a true family affair.

“What I’ve really gained is a family,” she reflected.

Why It Matters

For Mary Jo, GiGi’s Playhouse is more than just a place—it’s a mission close to her heart.

“Knowing the Down syndrome community has a place to call their own brings me so much joy. Being a small part of it is very humbling.”

If she could describe GiGi’s in one sentence, it would be this:
“GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center that empowers individuals and their families through free educational, therapeutic, and career programs.”

Looking Ahead

As for the future, She is excited about expanding programs and eventually moving to a larger, more accessible location. But her biggest hope is simple—seeing more families involved every week, not just at the big events.

“GiGi’s Playhouse is AMAZING. My favorite thing about GiGi’s is the people. GiGi’s has helped me grow and learn.”
