Volunteer Spotlight – Elizabeth

Have you met our OG Volunteer Elizabeth???

If you haven’t, well here’s your opportunity to learn some wonderful things about her!

Elizabeth is one of our founding families and Volunteer Lead of Teen Tastic (ages 13-17) group that focuses on social skills and team building activities). She brings with her not only a wealth of knowledge from her teaching background but her love of her community in particular the Down Syndrome community. She is also the mother to our awesome and photogenetic teen participant Katherine. It’s that family dynamic strength that brings a level of caring to volunteering that we so appreciate and are thankful for.

We asked Elizabeth to share about her involvement at GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, here’s what she had to say:

1. How did you hear about GiGi’s Playhouse/GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego?

I heard about GiGi’s Playhouse when Katherine was in the early years of elementary school and a group of people were trying to find a way to bring GiGi’s to San Diego.  I knew a place like GiGi’s Playhouse was something San Diego needed and we needed.   A place to gather with other families raising children with Down syndrome was a wonderful idea as well as the programs the playhouse offers.”

2. What inspired you to volunteer?

My reason for volunteering was a bit selfish.  I wanted a teen program that Katherine could attend so why not be the one to volunteer? Also, I want to see the playhouse grow, so it’s my small way of helping that to happen.

3. What is your favorite thing about GiGi’s Playhouse?

It’s a wonderfully positive place. It’s bright and cheery. It’s a place of hope and possibilities and acceptance.  I love that I can talk with other parents and share experiences with them and learn from them.  I love that Katherine can be with other individuals with Down syndrome and  I love that she is  completely accepted just as she is.

4. What would you like us to incorporate or do?

I’d love to hear from a professional or have a parent forum to discuss certain aspects of raising our children.”

5. Is there anything you would like to add?

I wish everyone could understand how special GiGi’s Playhouse is!

We cannot thank Elizabeth enough for her passion and drive for GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego. We strive to make things happen and push for that Acceptance for All!!!
