Volunteer Spotlight – Nick

Nick’s Tutor Sporting Connections

It’s those little sparks between people that build meaningful connections and one of our wonderful volunteers has honed in on that connectedness and ran with it. Meet our awesome volunteer Nick C.

Nick has been a volunteer here at GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego since June 2022 where he has had the opportunity to do literacy tutor. His first couple tutor partnerships were not the easiest but he continued on. Sometimes this happens and it is certainly ok to speak up as we want to make sure tutoring is enjoyable and a positive, encouraging learning experience for all.

The sporting stars aligned when Nick met Jack and they found that they both enjoyed sports. So, what better way to learn than through a connectedness. A little sports session before literacy tutoring whether it be some hoops, throwing the football or just getting some energy out, it works every time!

Now lets hear from Nick:

1. How did you hear about GiGi’s Playhouse/GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego?

I heard about Gigi’s Playhouse from an online search. I was looking for a place to volunteer in the community. Once I found it, I did some research on Gigi and the organization’s history. Seeing what they do for the communities nationwide and how happy everyone was I immediately knew it was the right fit!

2. What inspired you to volunteer?

I had always been involved in volunteer work back home in Ohio/Indiana through my church. Seeing the impact of sacrificing a small part of your week to show someone you care always made me feel fulfilled. When I moved out here to San Diego, I always felt that was missing.

Then a couple of years ago, I was going through a really hard time in my life. During those times, I believe that its very important to keep yourself busy and focus on helping others in any way you can. I don’t believe in coincidences and wholeheartedly know that God helped me find Gigi’s for that reason. Its hard to deny that from the impact it’s had on my life since I started volunteering here.

3. What is your favorite thing about GiGi’s Playhouse?

I love all of the participants and students. They always show up with a smile on their faces and are ready to have fun! It’s always inspiring to be around such a happy and positive group of people. It is truly the highlight of my week.

4. What would you like us to incorporate or do?

I would love to see some sort of monthly team sporting event to get all the participants and volunteers together and play kickball, soccer, bocce ball, etc. I think it would be another great way to bring everyone together!

5. Is there anything you would like to add?

If anyone is considering getting involved within the community, I couldn’t recommend Gigi’s of San Diego enough. From the board of directors to the participants, they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to know. You won’t ever have a bad time!

Thank you Nick for being such a great volunteer to GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego!!
