Participant Spotlight: Taking the First Step – How Takeru Found Confidence and Community

Have you ever wanted to try something new but felt a little unsure?

Maybe it was learning a new skill, joining a new group, or assuming a new leadership role. Taking that first step can be daunting, but it’s also where amazing growth happens! For teen participant Takeru, GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego has provided a supportive and welcoming space to try new things and grow as a leader in the community!

Takeru and his family learned of GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego through other parents of children with Down syndrome. Over the past year, he has immersed himself in many GiGi’s programs, including Fitness and the Generation G Youth Board.

Takeru really enjoys the Fitness class, which he attends weekly. Through this program, he has developed his fine and gross motor skills and built a new community of friends. As his mother Hiroko notes, he “is still quiet at the Fitness class, but other people recognize him and include him as a member. That makes him very comfortable.” Regarding Takeru’s participation in fitness, program instructor Riley describes him as, “an absolute star, especially in team activities like kickball, where [we] can lean on him to model behaviors for the whole group.”

Programs like Fitness at GiGi’s Playhouse are essential for individuals with Down syndrome, as they provide a structured and supportive environment to develop both physical and social skills. Regular participation in fitness activities helps improve strength, coordination, and motor skills, which are crucial for overall health and independence.

Beyond the physical benefits, these programs foster a sense of belonging and confidence, as participants build friendships and engage in teamwork. Instructors and peers create an encouraging atmosphere where individuals feel included and empowered to push their limits. By participating in fitness programs, individuals with Down syndrome not only enhance their physical well-being but also gain valuable social connections and self-esteem, reinforcing the importance of inclusive and adaptive programming.

This fall, Takeru joined the Generation G Youth Board, a dedicated and motivated group of high school students who see the importance of increasing awareness for individuals with Down syndrome and promoting acceptance, generosity, and kindness.

Serving on the Youth Board has allowed Takeru to become a leader in the local community. For instance, he represented the Youth Board at the La Jolla Farmer’s Market, assisting customers in selecting and bagging bracelets handmade by GiGi’s participants for a fundraiser. As Youth Board Advisor Laura notes, “Takeru has become an integral member of our Youth Board. It has been wonderful witnessing his growth as a leader as he actively engages in community projects and consistently puts forth his best effort!”

When asked about his role on the Youth Board, Takeru’s mother shares, “We have a college kid, so we totally understand how busy high school students are, but I think it’s very important to participate and volunteer because they can learn what activities are needed in the world, and what kinds of people are in need of help. That must be very helpful to think about their futures.” She also reflected on Takeru’s farmer’s market experience, noting, “The farmer’s market was a very beneficial opportunity for people to learn about GiGi’s and how the Youth Board supports the organization.”

Takeru’s journey is a powerful reminder that growth happens when we take that first step. By embracing new experiences, he has not only built confidence and skills but inspired those around him! At GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, we celebrate every moment of courage, big or small, and the incredible potential that unfolds when someone steps outside their comfort zone.

We hope Takeru’s story encourages others to try something new, take a chance, and discover their boundless potential!
