Best of All – Leo’s Cheer Experience of Inclusion
Sometimes it just takes the right song or activity to spark that magical “ah-ha” moment.
Leo, a GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego participant with a naturally expressive but shy demeanor, often feels overwhelmed when the Playhouse is buzzing with excited kiddos. Like many of our participants, he enjoys observing from the sidelines before joining in.
Recently, GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego had the joy of collaborating with FullOut21, a cheer program where kids with Down syndrome can express themselves, build confidence, and create lifelong friendships in a fun, inclusive space!
Leo and his brother Max joined the week-long Cheer Experience. Max has always been a cheerleader for his big brother, encouraging him especially when new situations feel intimidating. On the second day, while Max was engrossed in an activity, Leo quietly stood by the door, laughing and making his safety cookie monster “sing.” Then, noticing the floor exercise mats, he moseyed over—on his own—and jumped right in. This moment was a wonderful surprise to Lead Lauren, who had only seen Leo observing from afar.
Leo is truly one-of-a-kind, and we love seeing him explore his talents while having fun in a supportive environment!
“It always amazes me how some kiddos engage at their own pace,” shared Lauren, Founder of FullOut21. “They take note of the activities that draw them in, making it all the better the next time!”
Why Physical Activity and Social Programs Matter for Individuals with Down Syndrome
Programs like FullOut21 are incredibly beneficial for individuals with Down syndrome because they provide a structured, supportive environment where participants can build confidence, express themselves creatively, and develop both social and physical skills. Engaging in physical activities such as cheer, dance, and movement helps improve strength, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health—areas that individuals with Down syndrome often face challenges in.
Regular physical activity can also enhance motor planning, flexibility, and overall stamina, while supporting mental health by reducing stress and increasing feelings of joy and accomplishment. Beyond the physical benefits, these programs foster social connections, teamwork, and self-esteem, allowing participants to shine at their own pace in an inclusive and encouraging environment.
We also spoke with Leo’s mom, Lourdes, a founding parent of GiGi’s Playhouse San Diego, about her experience with GiGi’s Playhouse:
“I first heard about GiGi’s a little over 10 years ago, when I found out they were going to open the first GiGi’s Playhouse in California — right here in San Diego! I immediately looked it up and signed up, excited to help and contribute in any way I could. I saw it as a project that wouldn’t just benefit my son, but so many other families as well.
The benefits of participating have been so special. Leo has had the chance to be part of a community that understands and supports him, and even when he’s observing from a distance, I know he’s taking it all in. The programs give him space to grow at his own pace.
In terms of improvement, I think everything is already so thoughtfully done. But maybe adding more visual supports or clear structure in some sessions could help kids like Leo feel more comfortable joining in sooner.
One positive moment that stands out was when Leo surprised us all by joining a group activity after observing for a while — his smile said it all. Those little moments really stay with you.”
Stories like Leo’s remind us why GiGi’s Playhouse is such a magical place—a place where acceptance, inclusion, and joy come together.
