6 Ways Tutoring is Different at GiGi’s

Tutoring looks different at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities, and that’s the point.

Most traditional tutoring programs focus on catching students up: improving grades, completing assignments, and preparing for tests. While those goals matter, tutoring here at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities goes far beyond academics. It’s not just about what participants learn; it’s really about how they grow.

Here are 6 ways our tutoring is different from other tutoring programs.

A One-on-One, Personalized Approach
At GiGi’s, every tutoring session is individualized. Tutors work one-on-one with participants, tailoring lessons to their unique strengths, learning styles, and goals. There’s no “one size fits all” curriculum. Instead, each session is designed to meet the learner where they are and build from there, whether that’s strengthening reading skills, improving math comprehension, or building communication confidence.

Free, High-Quality Programming
One of the most remarkable differences is that tutoring at GiGi’s Playhouse is completely free. Families never have to worry about the financial barriers that often come with specialized tutoring services. This commitment ensures that every individual has access to consistent, high-quality educational support, regardless of their circumstances. Check out this previous blog for a cost comparison.

Confidence Comes First
While academic growth is important, confidence is the true cornerstone of GiGi’s tutoring programs. Tutors celebrate every success, big and small! They create a positive, encouraging environment where participants feel safe to try, make mistakes, and keep going. Over time, that confidence extends far beyond the learning lab and into school, relationships, and everyday life.

Trained Volunteer Tutors Who Truly Care
GiGi’s tutors aren’t just knowledgeable, they’re passionate. Volunteers receive training and ongoing support to ensure they can effectively work with individuals with Down syndrome. More importantly, they bring patience, empathy, and a genuine belief in each participant’s potential. That connection makes all the difference. This previous blog highlighting current tutors gives a glimpse into just a few of the amazing tutors here at GiGi’s.

A Focus on the “Best of All”
At GiGi’s Playhouse, progress isn’t measured against grade-level expectations or standardized benchmarks. Instead, it’s measured by each individual’s “Best of All.” Their personal growth, effort, and achievements are important. This philosophy shifts the focus from comparison to celebration, helping participants feel proud of what they accomplish.

More Than Tutoring, it’s a Community
Perhaps the biggest difference is the sense of belonging. GiGi’s isn’t just a place to learn; it’s a place to connect. Participants, families, tutors, and staff all become part of a supportive, uplifting community that celebrates every milestone together.

In the end, tutoring at GiGi’s Playhouse isn’t just about improving academic skills; it’s about empowering individuals, building confidence, and creating opportunities for lifelong success. And that’s what truly sets it apart.

Applications are now open for the 2026 summer session.

Participants & Volunteers – Learn More & Apply

Use the links below to find more details and submit your application:

Parents: As we look ahead to our busy summer tutoring session at GiGi’s Playhouse, we want to share a few helpful reminders for families who are planning to apply.

Because summer is one of our most popular sessions, we often receive more applications than we have available tutors. Our goal is always to serve as many individuals as possible while ensuring the best possible match for both the participants and the tutors.

When reviewing applications, priority placement is given to individuals who:

  • Have not previously participated in tutoring at GiGi’s Playhouse
  • Do not currently have access to tutoring or speech services elsewhere
  • Have more flexible availability, which allows for better tutor matching

Additionally, if you are interested in more than one subject area, you may have a greater chance of being matched with a tutor, as it provides more flexibility during the pairing process.

We are so grateful for the continued interest in our tutoring programs and remain committed to supporting each participant’s growth and success.

Volunteers: A list of current volunteer opportunities, including becoming a tutor, can be seen here.
