Which Program Is Right for Your Family?

Group vs. One-on-One Programs at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities: Which Is Right for Your Family?

One of the questions we hear most often at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities is, “Should my loved one participate in group programs or one-on-one programs?”

The answer is simple: Both!

Each type of program offers unique benefits, and together they help individuals with Down syndrome build confidence, develop new skills, and reach their personal goals. Because all our programs are 100% FREE, families have the opportunity to participate in whichever programs best fit their needs.

The Benefits of Group Programs

Group programs are designed to help participants learn alongside their peers in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. Every program follows a purposeful curriculum led by trained volunteers, ensuring activities are both engaging and goal-oriented.

Group programs help participants:

  • Build friendships and social connections
  • Practice communication skills
  • Learn teamwork and cooperation
  • Gain confidence by trying new things
  • Develop independence
  • Strengthen motor, cognitive, and life skills through hands-on activities

Whether participants are dancing during GiGiFIT, creating masterpieces in Art Explosion, exploring robotics, or cooking together in GiGi’s Kitchen, they’re learning while having fun with others who celebrate every achievement.

One of the greatest parts of our group programs is that everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace. Success looks different for every individual, and every milestone is worth celebrating.

The Benefits of One-on-One Programs

Our one-on-one programs provide individualized instruction tailored specifically to each participant’s strengths and goals.

Programs such as literacy tutoring, math tutoring, and the Amina Grace Speech & Language Program pair participants with trained volunteers or licensed speech-language pathologists who work together week after week.

One-on-one programs allow participants to:

  • Receive personalized instruction
  • Work toward individualized goals
  • Build confidence in a supportive setting
  • Learn at a pace that fits their needs
  • Celebrate measurable progress over time

These individualized sessions create strong relationships between participants and volunteers while providing focused support that helps participants continue growing both academically and personally.

Why We Encourage Both

While one-on-one programs build targeted skills, group programs provide opportunities to practice those skills in real-life social situations.

For example:

  • A participant may practice reading during literacy tutoring, then gain confidence reading directions during a group cooking class.
  • Someone working on speech goals can use those communication skills while making new friends in Teen Tastic or Fantastic Friends.
  • Skills developed during math tutoring may be reinforced during games, shopping activities, or cooking programs.

The combination of individualized learning and group experiences creates meaningful opportunities for growth.

A Lifetime of Learning

GiGi’s Playhouse is unique because we offer programs for every stage of life from infants and toddlers all the way through adulthood.

As participants grow, their needs evolve, and our programs evolve with them. Families often find that participating in a variety of programs helps their loved one continue learning while building lasting friendships and becoming an active member of our Playhouse community.

More Than Programs

Whether someone attends one-on-one tutoring, joins a weekly group program, or participates in both, they’re becoming part of something much bigger than a class.

They’re joining a community that believes in acceptance, celebrates every achievement, and sees unlimited potential in every individual.

At GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities, we’re committed to providing purposeful, results-driven programs that empower individuals with Down syndrome to achieve their greatest potential, and we can’t wait to welcome your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my loved one participate in both group and one-on-one programs?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it whenever possible. One-on-one programs help participants build specific skills, while group programs provide opportunities to practice those skills in a fun, social setting. Many families find that combining both types of programs leads to the greatest growth and confidence.

Are the programs really free?

Yes! Every program offered at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities is 100% FREE to participants and their families. We are able to provide these life-changing programs thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, fundraising events, and volunteers.

How do I know which programs are right for my loved one?

Our team is happy to help! We can discuss your loved one’s age, interests, strengths, and goals to recommend programs that would be a great fit. Whether your family is new to GiGi’s Playhouse or has been with us for years, we’re here to help you find the right opportunities.

How do I apply for one-on-one programs?

Applications for literacy, math, and the Amina Grace Speech & Language Program are offered during designated registration periods (spring, summer, and fall) throughout the year. Because these programs pair participants with trained volunteers or speech-language pathologists, space is limited. We encourage families to apply as soon as registration opens. This is announced on social media and via email.

Do I need to register for group programs?

Yes. Most group programs require advance registration so we can plan appropriately and ensure the best experience for everyone. Registration is simple and can be completed through our online program calendar or by contacting the playhouse directly.

What do I need to know about registering and attending programs?

There are a few program attendance reminders on the programs page linked here.

What if my loved one has never participated before?

That’s perfectly okay! Everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth. Our staff and volunteers are committed to creating a welcoming, encouraging environment where participants can feel comfortable, have fun, and grow at their own pace. If you’ve never been to the playhouse before, we’d love to meet with you before attending a program. We can give you a tour of the playhouse, share information about specific programs, and answer any questions you may have. We also have welcome bags for new families!

Who leads the programs?

Our group and tutoring programs are led by trained volunteers who follow GiGi’s Playhouse’s purposeful, results-driven curriculum. The Amina Grace Speech & Language Program is provided by licensed speech-language pathologists. Every volunteer receives training to help create a positive and successful experience for participants.

How can I get involved as a volunteer?

We’re always looking for caring individuals who want to make a difference! Volunteers are essential to everything we do, from leading programs and tutoring participants to helping with special events and behind-the-scenes projects. Whether you can give a few hours a month or more, there’s a place for you at GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities. Visit our volunteer webpage to learn more.
