Participant Best of All
Darrian has a lot to say. Darrian has been participating in our adult group speech group, aka, Coffee Club for over a year. She tends to be quiet, taking everything in and responding with gestures and whispers. This week Darrian was participating with a voice we could hear! Darrian has been working with a speech therapist and gaining confidence in sharing her voice. We are thrilled to hear what she has to say, and all of the other coffee clubbers were so supportive and proud of their friend.
Volunteer Spotlight
August wrapped up the summer tutoring session and 11 tutors had dedicated their summer to work with our participants in literacy and math. They made the session possible and we can’t thank them enough for their time and dedication.
Also with summer coming to a close, it means back to school for many including the local college students. St Ambrose University hosts a Beecoming Ambrosian event at the beginning of their fall semester. This event takes freshmen students out into the community to volunteer. We were blessed to have a Playhouse full of freshmen on a Friday in August. They accomplished a ton while they were here! They rearranged and cleaned the learning labs and main playhouse space, deep cleaned the bathrooms, kitchen, and family room, and prepared materials for the fall GiGiFIT program. We hope to see some of these freshmen as volunteers again in the years to come!
Playhouse Inspiration
Our gratitude committee got busy to help celebrate a friend’s birthday. Mark loves to get mail and he turned 60 in August. The committee of friends worked for over an hour and made him 16 unique and personal birthday cards to send. We hope they made Mark as happy to receive them as it made us to make them. Plus, we heard that a very kind GiGi’s friend took him balloons and a yard sign too!
