Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day
Every year on March 21, people around the world celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), a day dedicated to raising awareness, advocating for inclusion, and celebrating the incredible abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.
The date itself, 3/21, is meaningful. Down syndrome occurs when a person has three copies of the 21st chromosome, instead of the usual two. This genetic difference is also called Trisomy 21, which is why March 21 was chosen for this global celebration.
A Day to Celebrate and Advocate
World Down Syndrome Day is more than just awareness. It’s about recognizing the talents, accomplishments, and contributions of people with Down syndrome in our communities.
Across the world, people celebrate the day in various ways. We’ve provided some suggestions below. Most importantly, it’s a reminder that individuals with Down syndrome belong in schools, workplaces, and communities, living full and meaningful lives.
Celebrating in the Quad Cities
Here in the Quad Cities, we are fortunate to have a strong and supportive community that believes in the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. At GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities families come together to learn, grow, and celebrate every milestone.
Our Playhouse is filled with ‘Best of All’ moments every day. Whether it’s a participant gaining confidence in a literacy program, someone performing in front of a group for the first time, or a young adult building independence through career development programming, these moments show the incredible potential within every individual.
World Down Syndrome Day is a special opportunity for our local community to celebrate these achievements while also continuing to build a more inclusive Quad Cities for everyone.
Celebrating at GiGi’s Playhouse
At GiGi’s Playhouse, every day is a celebration of what individuals with Down syndrome can achieve. Through our free, purposeful, and progressive programming, participants of all ages build confidence, learn new skills, and reach goals that once seemed impossible.
From early learning programs for infants and toddlers to career development opportunities for adults, our Playhouse is filled with moments that remind us why inclusion matters.
Our participants, volunteers, and families inspire us daily with their determination, joy, and resilience.
How You Can Celebrate
You can join the celebration of WDSD in many ways:
🧦Wear your brightest or most colorful socks on March 21
Why socks? Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes looks like mismatched socks!
💙💛Wear blue and yellow clothing or an awareness ribbon
Need a ribbon? Stop by GiGi’s and pick one up!
🎉Plan a celebration with your friends, family, coworkers, or school classroom

This year, we are celebrating by knocking down bowling pins in addition to the barriers that we knock down every day.
🎳Join us on Saturday, March 21st, at QC Family Entertainment Center from 3:00-5:00 pm. There will be bowling, snacks, games, and prizes, too! Don’t forget to rock your socks!
