Volunteer Spotlight: Martyna!

GiGi’s Playhouse is a 98% volunteer run organization. We rely on committed volunteers to deliver our programs so that we can offer them free of charge to our families. Over the course of a year, GiGi’s Playhouse NYC engages over 150 different volunteers who give nearly 4,000 hours of their time to support our mission. Of all these volunteers, we have a core team of about 25-30 volunteers who come in every week for various programs. Martyna Okuniewska is one of our rock star volunteers, and has been helping out at the Playhouse for FOUR YEARS! That makes her one of our longest tenured volunteers.

If you have been to the Playhouse on a Saturday morning, you know Martyna well. She tutors one-to-one every Saturday morning, working with multiple students each semester. She also helps run our Literacy Pod and helps train new tutors.

When we asked fellow volunteers about Martyna, they describe her not just as a colleague, but a role model. One tutor, Sam Walter said, “Martyna has been instrumental in helping me get started leading my own tutoring sessions. She’s so knowledgeable and supportive and has been a great resource to me a lot of others who volunteer regularly at GiGi’s Playhouse. Plus, the kids love her!”

Our volunteers are the key to our organization. They deliver our programs and create the culture that keeps people coming back. We are grateful for Martyna for her outstanding work and leadership!
