Meet the Board: David Kotler

This week, we are excited to spotlight Board of Directors member, David Kotler! David has quickly become a part of the GiGi’s NYC family and is a huge asset to our team. Please enjoy the below Q&A with David, and join us in thanking David for his strong commitment to our community

How and when did you first get involved with GiGi’s Playhouse NYC?

I first became involved with GiGi’s Playhouse NYC in June 2020 when I was fortunate enough to be asked to join the Board of Directors.

Why did you decide to join the Board of Directors?

My decision to join the Board of Directors was an easy one – like many people during the first few months of the pandemic, I was looking for opportunities to volunteer my time and experience in a way that could help others. My daughter, who is studying to be a special education teacher, inspired me to seek an organization that focused on children.  From the moment I was contacted about joining the GiGi’s NYC Board, I knew I had found what I was looking for – an amazing organization devoted to supporting and empowering the Down syndrome community, with an energized and passionate group of Board members.

What does GiGi’s NYC mean to you?

Although I had not had any prior close experience with the Down syndrome community, from the moment I joined the GiGi’s NYC Board I have been inspired by our community members – the children and adults, their families, their supporters. The programs that we offer truly make a meaningful difference in the lives of our community members.

What does your role on the Board look like?

I am currently the co-chair of the Governance Committee, which is a good fit with my “day job” as an attorney. I also participate in our monthly “Dad’s Social Club,” which provides the dads in our community with the opportunity to get to know other dads, share stories and tips, or otherwise enjoy conversing about the world.

How do you enjoy spending your free time?

I am a litigator by day, which I still very much enjoy after 27 years of practice. I have three wonderful children (Andrew – college senior, Emily – college sophomore, and Jack – 6th grade) who also keep me very busy and engaged. In my “free” time, I enjoy playing golf, cooking, and spending time at the Jersey Shore.

David, we truly appreciate all that you do for GiGi’s NYC! The dads who attend Dad’s Social Club have very much enjoyed getting to know you and appreciate all the insights that you bring to the group. On behalf of the entire GiGi’s NYC community, we thank you for joining our Board of Directors and working to advance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome every day!
