1:1 Math Spotlight: Shizuka!

It’s always the biggest accomplishment when we have a student surpass what anyone expected. Far too often, people believe that it’s too late for adults with Down syndrome to learn and thrive in certain areas of their life. This month, we are highlighting the accomplishments of Shizuka, one of our amazing interns in Hugs and Mugs, who is also in math tutoring.

Shizuka’s mother approached us in the Spring, wanting to register her for math, but she had little hope for her progress because she was starting from square one. Being a 2017 GiGi U graduate, Shizuka forgot some of what she learned and was able to do some counting and writing of numbers, but now her skills have exploded since being tutored by Neetan, a phenomenal tutor! She is now able to do so many things including, but not limited to:

  • counting to 100 and beyond

  • counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s

  • adding single digit and double digits, often in her head

  • how to tell time

  • recognizing and solving patterns

  • and much more!

Shizuka’s mother is thrilled with how much she has learned in a few short months and there is unlimited potential for the future! Her new skills have helped her with her job in Hugs, general problem solving, and boosting her confidence!

Thanks to the tutoring program and wonderful tutors like Neetan, we are changing the world and proving that our individuals can do anything and everything they set their mind to!

    Hi.
    I can’t tell how much I appreciate Shizuka’s progress!
    Shizuka enjoys and progresses amazingly.
I gave up for Math since I sent her to Kumon for 5 years, so even if I didn’t apply Math tutoring.
But, I was very wrong. Nothing is too late !
