Downright Amazing

Have you noticed how popular rock painting has become lately?  This, despite the fact that the act of applying paint to rock to create art is almost as old as time itself. And although finding a “perfect rock” to paint may seem elusive, painting any old rock is a great way of being creative and expressing yourself with art.

Last week, Amanda Winklemann gave a presentation to our adult participants on “Keeping Social Media Social”. After she finished, Amanda led the group in an activity of painting “kindness rocks”. Our participants really let their creative spirit show, including one of our Tuesday regulars named Steven.  In fact, his rock was downright amazing.  But it took me a while to figure out why.

When I first walked by to look at Steven’s rock, it was painted half blue and half yellow.  He said that it represented “night and day”. But really, Steven was pulling a fast one on me.  He chose blue and yellow because they are the official colors for Down syndrome awareness.

And Steven wasn’t done with his masterpiece until he proudly added the message: “Downright Amazing”. And that’s exactly right. Steven’s rock, just like Steven… just like the other participants that he cares so much about… and just like GiGi’s Playhouse, are Downright Amazing.

The staff, volunteers, participants and their families all know that.  Do you? If not, it’s probably because you haven’t stopped by for a tour.  Let’s change that, shall we?  Call our office at (515) 252-7529 or email us desmoines@gigiplayhouse.org and let’s get a visit scheduled.
