The Dignity of Risk

You might be asking yourself, “Dignity of risk? I’ve never heard of that! What is it?” Essentially, the dignity of risk refers to the right of all individuals to take reasonable risks and make their own decisions, even if those decisions involve the potential for failure. This concept is particularly significant for individuals with Down syndrome, who are often shielded from risks by well-meaning caregivers and society at large. While the intention is to protect, overprotectiveness can limit opportunities for learning, growth, and independence.

Dignity of risk is important because it promotes a variety of skills that are necessary for independence and quality of life. Not only does it encourage independent thinking, but it also builds self-confidence, encourages personal growth, and fosters inclusion.

In promoting independence, we allow individuals with Down syndrome to take risks that help them develop essential life skills. It encourages problem-solving, decision-making, and self-reliance. These skills are crucial for being an active member of the community, living independently, and maintaining a job. When individuals are allowed the opportunity to take risks and make their own choices, they gain a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Successes, even small ones, build confidence, while failures provide valuable learning experiences.

Experiencing both success and failure, individuals with Down syndrome better understand their strengths and areas for improvement. It fosters resilience and adaptability, qualities that are vital for personal development. The dignity of risk aligns with the principles of inclusion and equality, too, as it recognizes that individuals with Down syndrome have the same rights and capabilities as anyone else to pursue their goals and dreams.

Now, how can we implement the dignity of risk for our friends and loved ones? One way is to educate and support caregivers. They should understand the benefits of allowing individuals with Down syndrome to make their own choices and the positive impact it has on their development. Another important step in implementing this is creating a safe environment. While promoting risk-taking, it’s important to ensure that environments are safe and supportive. This means providing appropriate guidance, setting realistic boundaries, and being there to offer assistance if needed. The last thing we want is for our friends to get hurt or injured, so that’s when you as a caregiver can make the judgment of where the risk lands. It’s important to note that the dignity of risk is personalized to each individual. You may begin implementing this in simple ways like allowing your loved one to stay home alone or to walk to the drug store by themself. Then, as the individual’s confidence is strengthened that spectrum may allow for more liberties! To promote success, we must empower individuals with Down syndrome to advocate for themselves, teach them to express their preferences, make informed decisions, and seek help when necessary. Lastly, the most important step is to recognize and celebrate the successes of taking a risk. Acknowledge their efforts and encourage them to continue taking on new challenges.

At GiGi’s Playhouse, we see the dignity of risk in action every day. Our programs are designed to empower individuals with Down syndrome to take on new challenges, whether it’s through physical activities, social interactions, or educational pursuits. For instance, our GiGiFIT program encourages participants to push their physical limits, building strength and confidence. Our social programs provide opportunities for individuals to develop friendships, navigate social situations, and make independent choices.

Embracing the dignity of risk for individuals with Down syndrome is about more than just allowing them to take risks. It’s about believing in their potential, respecting their autonomy, and supporting their journey toward independence. By fostering an environment that values risk-taking and personal growth, we help individuals with Down syndrome lead richer, more fulfilling lives. Together, we can build a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential and experience the dignity of risk.
