EPIC Participants visit Milt’s Barbecue for the Perplexed

Milt’s Barbecue for the Perplexed

The adults who attended the last EPIC program met at Milt’s Barbecue for the Perplexed. They ordered dinner and observed potential job opportunities at a restaurant. We often take the skills needed to select, order, and pay for a meal at a restaurant for granted. This outing provided EPIC participants an opportunity to practice things like budgeting for a meal, including tip at the end, speaking clearly and politely to the wait staff, and other restaurant etiquette skills.

More Than Just Out To Dinner

As the adults arrived at Milt’s, the program leaders handed out a questionnaire to do while at the restaurant. First, the participants did some research on Milt’s such as: restaurant hours, history, address, and allergy sensitivities. The participants were asked to bring a tablet, smart phone or computer to help them access the restaurant’s website and find the answers. The adults were very resourceful and quick thinking; they went to the front door and asked for business cards to find the restaurant hours and address.

Milt’s Extra Innings

Nextdoor to the main restaurant is the Kosher Deli, Milt’s Extra Innings. The owner was inspired by his niece to open a place where individuals with disabilities can find employment. The E in EPIC stands for empowerment. This specific outing highlights members of the community with disabilities in leadership positions with paid employment. Visiting Extra Innings was a great opportunity for the participants in EPIC to see individuals with similar abilities working hard at a paid position.

Next EPIC Meeting

The EPIC program will meet again at the playhouse on March 24th at 3:00pm. They will make a grocery list with pizza ingredients, walk to Trader Joes and purchase what they need. Upon returning to the playhouse the participants will assemble and bake their pizzas. Check out our calendar for more information and to RSVP!
