A Sensory Friendly Fourth of July

Written by: Emily Mangan, GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago Intern

Summer is flying by and the Fourth of July is right around the corner! As we look forward to watching fireworks, hosting barbeques and attending parades, we understand that the Fourth of July can be overwhelming for everyone, but especially our friends and loved ones who are sensitive to sensory input.

Here are some tips and tricks you can add into your celebration to ensure it is a fun and safe holiday for everyone.

  1. Bring Noise Canceling Headphones: Loud noises from fireworks and large gatherings can be overwhelming. Headphones can help block out the sound and make the experience more comfortable.
  2. Bring Sunglasses: Sunshine and bright lights, especially from fireworks, can be intense. Sunglasses can help reduce visual overstimulation.
  3. Choose a Smart Parking Spot: Park in a location that allows for an easy and quick exit, just in case you need to leave early. Or you can even plan on leaving early. Consider only going to part of the activities. For example, finding a spot near the front of the parade and leaving once the parade passes by.
  4. Preview Fireworks Ahead of Time: Watch a video or read a story about fireworks. Talk about what the day will look like, so individuals will know what to expect. Knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety and increase comfort.
  5. Bring Comfort Items: Favorite toys, snacks, or blankets can offer reassurance and help create a sense of familiarity. Consider putting together a bag of comfort items that can be nearby all day.
  6. Locate a Calm Space: Identify a quiet area nearby where you can take breaks if things become too overwhelming. This could be your car, a bedroom or a space away from crowds.
  7. Show Enthusiasm: Get excited! The Fourth of July is so much fun! Positive energy can be contagious and help others feel more relaxed and happy about the experience.
