World Down Syndrome Day 2019

Mission: Include Everyone!

This year’s tag like #LeaveNoOneBehind and our constant strive to live a #GenerationG life have one major theme in common: inclusion. We all have an individual with Down syndrome in our life who has improved who we are in many ways. When he is included on the playground, in the classroom, or in the work force, an opportunity for growth is present. The individual with Down syndrome has role models and examples of what he can achieve by looking to his peers. His peers have a great example of hard work and perseverance to achieve a desired goal.

When we have a group program at our playhouse, each participant has an important role. If someone has better fine motor skills in the kitchen, it would be their job to open the food bags and Tupperware. Then they’ll pass the opened containers to their friend who can dump them into the bowls and stir. Someone who is having a tough time standing in the kitchen for long periods of time can sit and read the recipe and directions and monitor the timers. Each person on this team has unique skills and brings something special to the program. This concept is true outside of the playhouse. We should strive to give individuals with Down syndrome valuable roles in our community. They have so much to offer and by including them the process will generally be more enjoyable.

The #GenerationG pledge is a promise to be more kind, generous, and accepting. With that frame of mind, it will be easy to make sure you #LeaveNoOneBehind! Check out our website for more information on how you can live a #GenerationG life!
