Breaking Barriers, One Step at a Time: Celebrating Matt

Over the past several months, Matt has been working hard to build his confidence and take on challenges that once felt overwhelming. One of the strategies that has made a big difference is breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces, especially during literacy tutoring. With the support of his tutor, Tom (who Matt absolutely loves and even named one of his stuffed animals after!), he’s been able to approach learning in a way that feels achievable and empowering. What once may have felt intimidating is now something Matt tackles with determination and pride (and a bit of encouragement).

Recently, during a special Destination Discovery program in collaboration with First Tee, Matt demonstrated just how far he has come. While he was initially hesitant to have his mom leave the room, he made the brave choice to stay, participate, and fully engage in the experience. He gave it his best effort from start to finish, staying in the room the entire time, trusting himself and the environment around him.

One of our volunteers shared, “I was really impressed with Matt last night, as we talked about him going out of his comfort zone to participate without Mom present. He also showed amazing communication and self-advocacy skills… he was offered a sticker and shared that he didn’t like wearing stickers but would still take one. I’ve been super impressed with him lately!!”

That moment of self-advocacy—clearly expressing a preference while still engaging socially—may seem small, but it reflects something much bigger: Matt is finding his voice. He’s learning to communicate his needs, make choices, and navigate new situations with growing independence.

At GiGi’s Playhouse, these are the victories we celebrate. Not just the outcomes, but the courage it takes to get there. Matt, we are so proud of you! Your willingness to try, your persistence through challenges, and your growing confidence inspire everyone around you. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!
