Volunteer Spotlight: Sisters Yusra & Sireen Mohammed — A Dynamic Duo Making a Big Impact at GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta

At GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta, volunteers don’t just support our programs, they shape the warmth, community, and connection that define our Playhouse. This month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on two sisters whose dedication, kindness, and initiative have made a meaningful difference: Yusra and Sireen Mohammed.

You’ve probably seen them around the Playhouse—leading activities, supporting programs, laughing with participants, or diving into behind-the-scenes projects that many wouldn’t dream of taking on. Most recently, the sisters took it upon themselves to clean out and reorganize our storage closets, a massive task they tackled with enthusiasm and care.

But their impact goes far beyond organization. Their story is one of curiosity, courage, and a true heart for service.

Sireen’s Story: Finding Community and Giving Back

Sireen, the older of the two sisters, discovered GiGi’s almost two years ago while working as a special education intern at Northwestern Middle School. A teacher there noticed her passion for child neurology and suggested she check out GiGi’s Playhouse. The idea stuck.

Even so, walking in for the first time was nerve-wracking. Sireen had driven past the Playhouse for years but had never been inside. She admits she felt unsure of what to expect. But the moment she stepped through the doors, everything changed.

What struck her first was the sense of home. She watched families settle in, share stories, exchange resources, and support one another. She saw kids and their siblings play together during hangouts, and she felt the warmth and connection that define our Playhouse community.

That feeling kept her coming back to every kind of program we offer. Whether she’s helping toddlers in LMNOP, guiding participants in GiGiFIT, or lending a hand in the kitchen, Sireen jumps in wherever she’s needed. And she loves the behind-the-scenes tasks just as much as the program time. Organizing closets, prepping the Playhouse the day before programs—it all brings her joy.

One of her favorite moments happens often: the cooking programs. She lights up when participants proudly offer her a taste of what they’ve made. “It’s the sweetest thing,” she shared with a smile.

For Sireen, volunteering is personal, too. Her younger sister has Aicardi Syndrome, and seeing the supportive, inclusive environment at GiGi’s made a deep impression. She was touched when staff warmly encouraged her sister to join programs—even though she does not have Down syndrome. To Sireen, that inclusivity spoke volumes.

Sireen is now taking her knowledge of GiGi’s Playhouse on the road! She attends college Augusta, GA and has joined the Start Up Committee of GiGi’s Playhouse Augusta. She even attended the GiGi’s National Leadership Conference this year to gain more knowledge to take back to this blossoming GiGi’s community!

Yusra’s Story: Taking a Leap and Finding Joy

Inspired by her sister’s enthusiasm, Yusra decided to give volunteering a try about a year ago. Even though she was nervous—trying new things has always been a bit intimidating for her—she pushed herself to step out of her comfort zone. And she’s so glad she did.

One of the first things Yusra grew to love was working in the kitchen. Cooking has always been something she enjoys, and getting to combine that with helping kids and teens create something they can proudly eat afterward quickly became a highlight.

Like her sister, Yusra isn’t afraid to take on the less glamorous tasks either. The two of them have become somewhat famous for their storage-closet makeovers, turning piles of supplies into neatly labeled, easy-to-find essentials for our programs.

But she also has a soft spot for LMNOP, especially working with the toddlers. She describes them as “super sweet,” and says she’s learned so much from supporting children at such a young developmental stage.

One of Yusra’s favorite memories happened during a teen hangout. She found herself playing hide and seek—a moment where everyone, volunteers and participants alike, were laughing, running around, and simply having fun. It was a reminder of what GiGi’s is all about: joy, connection, belonging.

For both Yusra and Sireen, volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta has been transformative. It’s pushed them to discover new strengths, connect with others, and become part of a community that celebrates every person’s potential. Their dedication—whether in a bustling kitchen or a quiet storage closet—has made the Playhouse a brighter, more welcoming place.

We are deeply grateful for the love, time, and energy they bring to our families and programs. Their story is a beautiful example of what happens when people show up with open hearts and a willingness to help.

Thank you, Yusra and Sireen, for everything you do. You truly embody the spirit of GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta!
