Elisha McKenzie: A Zumba Star, Self-Advocate, and Community Leader

At just 22 years old, Elisha McKenzie is already living proof of what it means to follow your dreams and inspire others along the way. A vibrant and driven young woman with Down syndrome, Elisha has built a powerful resume of advocacy, leadership, and joy — all fueled by her passion for Zumba and a heart for inclusion.

Elisha’s journey into the world of dance-fitness began at the age of 16, when she took her first Zumba class. She instantly fell in love with the rhythm, movement, and community it brought her. With unwavering support and encouragement from her parents, Elisha didn’t stop at being a participant — she set her sights on becoming a certified Zumba instructor. And that’s exactly what she did.

Today, Elisha shares her love of Zumba with others by teaching monthly classes for kids and teens at GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta, where her energy is infectious and her impact immeasurable. She also leads the warmups for our GiGi’s Fitness Awareness Challenge (GFAC) events and has become a beloved face of fitness and fun at several Down syndrome community events.

But Elisha’s story doesn’t stop at Zumba.

In 2025, Elisha will serve as the Self-Advocate Board Member at GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta, a role that recognizes her leadership and lived experience. She’s also been featured on Atlanta News First and in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), where her inspiring journey has reached thousands.

Her accomplishments include:

  • Serving as a greeter on the Guest Services team at Gwinnett Church
  • Representing Georgia as a Youth Ambassador and Mentor for Supported Decision Making (SDM)
  • Traveling to Washington, D.C. for the International Initiative for Disability Leadership (IIDL) conference
  • Leading Zumba warmups at major events including:
    • The GiGi’s Fit 5K at Grant Park (2024 & 2025)
    • The Atlanta Down Syndrome Buddy Walk (2024)
    • The Atlanta Down Syndrome Christmas Party (2024)
    • The Max Moon Race at Suwanee Town Center
  • Teaching Zumba at:
    • Bloom Work and Play in Roswell, GA
    • Spectrum Summer Camp (June–July 2025)
    • Inclusive Connect online during Spring Break 2025
  • And this fall, she’ll be lighting up the stage at the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network’s Rockin’ Mom Retreat at Callaway Gardens, leading a Zumba session for over 400 moms!

Elisha is not only a Zumba instructor — she’s a movement of her own. Through every class, event, and interaction, she’s changing perceptions, lifting others up, and showing the world the power of determination, joy, and community. We are beyond proud to have Elisha as part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family, and we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.
