When you look at your kids, what do you see? A Dad’s Perspective.

Love?
Yourself?
A disability?
I am aware that I do not see my boys as the world may see them. For my oldest, the world may see a boy with Down Syndrome while I see Max. I’m lucky to be his Dad, and I have the privilege to experience life through his eyes. We enjoy the small, simple things in life – time with Ben (brother), all things Mama, sunny days, pools, ice cream, Bert (the dog), extra iPad time, I spy, math talks, rather (a game), chick-fil-a, and many more. Life slows down and is not experienced at a hurried, “what’s next” pace that provides space to enjoy even the trivial or mundane aspects of life. Max is smart, funny, kind, determined, and compassionate. We celebrate milestones that may seem trivial to some but are months, sometimes years in the making that may come naturally to a typically developing peer. But when Max attains the milestone – our Family rejoices and we witness how proud Max is that your heart may explode!
Simply put – I don’t see a disability but an extraordinary son! I have personally benefited from being his Dad. He has made me more patient, kind, understanding, grateful, humble, and thankful. He makes me better! And I think He makes the world better too!
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.””
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16:7‬ ‭
