Why GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau Loves World Down Syndrome Day

(And Why It Feels a Bit Like a Big, Joyful Pep Rally!)

At GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau, World Down Syndrome Day isn’t just another date on the calendar—it’s our big, colorful, joy‑filled celebration of progress, confidence, and community. Sure, March 21 represents the triplication of the 21st chromosome, but for us, it represents something bigger: the amazing, unstoppable achievements our participants bring into the world each day.

Because Progress Happens Here Every Day

Across the GiGi’s Playhouse network, individuals with Down syndrome are breaking barriers. That progress is made possible through GiGi’s Playhouse’s commitment to free, purposeful, research‑based educational, therapeutic, and career programs that support individuals from infancy through adulthood.

And the driving force behind those achievements? A deep belief that every individual with Down syndrome is capable of greatness when given opportunity, support, and encouragement.

World Down Syndrome Day gives us the perfect moment to celebrate that progress in a big, joyful way.

Because Our Community Is Bursting With Potential

GiGi’s Playhouse is part of a global movement for acceptance, connection, and empowerment. With over 61 locations across the U.S. and Mexico and virtual programming reaching families worldwide, our Wausau Playhouse is plugged into something much larger—a network that celebrates ability, inclusion, and growth

That global momentum inspires us at the local level to be seen and recognized by our local community for all of our participants achievements as well as promoting inclusion and acceptance everywhere our participants go. When we see GiGi Gianni—our organization’s namesake—addressing the United Nations to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day or singing the National Anthem at White Sox games and advocate for global acceptance, it reminds us that the voices in our community matter too.

If GiGi can speak and sing on an international stage, imagine what our Wausau participants might do next.

Because WDSD Lets Us Celebrate What Makes Us “Extra”

We love celebrating our community’s energy, courage, and spark year‑round—but WDSD gives us the chance to turn the celebration up even louder and celebrate what makes individuals with Down syndrome extra special.

That’s exactly the spirit we’re bringing to Wausau this year.

🎉 How We’re Celebrating in Wausau

We’re making World Down Syndrome Daytwo‑day celebration, because one day just isn’t enough for all the joy we want to share!

🍨 March 20 — Community Ice Cream Social

We’re kicking off the celebration early with a Community Ice Cream Social—a delicious chance for families, friends, volunteers, and supporters to come together and celebrate the joy and connection that makes GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau so special.

👗✨ March 21 — World Down Syndrome Day Fashion Show & Performance

On the big day itself, March 21, we’re rolling out the runway for a spectacular Fashion Show and Performance, starring our amazing participants.

Expect confidence.
Expect creativity.
Expect joy.

Most of all, expect to see individuals with Down syndrome shining exactly as they are—proud, powerful, and full of potential.

Because Acceptance Grows When We Celebrate Out Loud

GiGi’s Playhouse exists to create a world where individuals with Down syndrome are embraced in their families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

World Down Syndrome Day helps us amplify that message. Every cheer at the fashion show, every connection made over ice cream, every moment of celebration helps expand understanding and build a more accepting community.

Because Joy Is Contagious—and Worth Sharing

Walk into GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau and you’ll feel it immediately: the energy, the joy, the determination, the pride. That’s why WDSD means so much to us. It’s our chance to celebrate not just a chromosome, but the people who make our Playhouse extraordinary.

The extra chromosome?
We like to call it extra love, extra joy, and extra sparkle.

And that’s something worth celebrating—on March 20, on March 21, and every day after.
