I Can Barely Spell and Count: There’s No Way I Can Be a Tutor for GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau!

When many of our volunteers first heard about the opportunity to volunteer as a tutor at GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau, their immediate reaction was, “There’s no way I can do this. I can barely spell and count!” But as they learned more about the program, they realized that their initial fears were unfounded. Here’s why:

Volunteer Flexibility

One of the best things about volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse is the flexibility it offers. Whether you have a busy schedule or just a few hours to spare, there are opportunities to fit your availability. This flexibility makes it easy to balance volunteering with other commitments. When you apply to tutor, you share your availability, and we match you with a student who has the same schedule. We understand that plans can change due to work trips, vacations, or illness, so we are flexible!

Comprehensive Tutor Training

Worried about not having the skills to be a tutor? GiGi’s Playhouse has you covered. We provide comprehensive training for all volunteers. This training covers everything from basic tutoring techniques to specific strategies for working with individuals with Down syndrome. You’ll be equipped with the knowledge and tools you need to be an effective tutor. Training includes about 5 hours of self-led training modules via our GiGi’s training website and in-person training.

No Experience Necessary

Perhaps the most reassuring aspect of volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse is that no prior experience with individuals with Down syndrome is required. The program is designed to support volunteers every step of the way. You’ll be guided by experienced staff and tutors and have access to online resources and an entire closet of fun and engaging items at the Playhouse that will help you feel confident in your role.

Making a Difference

Volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau is not just about teaching; it’s about making a meaningful impact in someone’s life. The relationships you build and the progress you see in your students are incredibly rewarding. You’ll quickly realize that your ability to spell or count perfectly is far less important than your willingness to help and support others.

So, if you’re hesitant about volunteering because you think you lack the necessary skills, take the leap! GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau provides the training, flexibility, and support you need to succeed. Your unique talents and dedication can make a world of difference.
